I had someone who stated today that there never was brindle in the german shepherd history. That it was a lie that's being spread around and gaining because of the internet. I'm curious, what would you all say to this?

I have photos of breed-surveyed brindle German Shepherd dogs.

I bought the book about a decade before the "internet" was even heard of by most people, so your "source" of knowledge is about as accurate as the very thing they decry.

It's considered a "lost" color..  I'd bet any current GSD with brindle color is mixed somewhere.

I believe that any now have something mixed in somewhere too, but i thought Horand and Beowulf were thought to have been brindle, or have some brindle markings? She claims they were sable and there was never any brindle EVER.

Since nobody has precise details of ALL dogs used in the original formation of the breed

(even Von Stephanitz's records were incomplete on some of the early dogs taken from

shepherds working in different parts of Germany)  it was very likely that a few of those had

brindle markings.  But it did 'die out' with organised breeding of the GSD for colour, for

Show competition.  It seems to have been revived in recent years; maybe due to new

directions in breeding taken by working dog breeders, maybe through the odd outcross

to another breed creeping in.

Brindle + aa (recessive black) - dog will be solid black (recessive black does not allow the production of phaeomelanin in the coat)
