I'm a registered nurse, we give it to patients for nerve/deep muscle pain. Never heard it given to dogs.

I take it for neuropathy caused from diabetes type 2. It is also used for seizures or so it says. I couldn't live without it. The soles of my feet burns so bad, it's like I'm close to a fireplace or heater and am unable to move away. I know other people have other symtoms as well, mine is the bottoms of my feet. Can't think of why dogs use it unless it's for seizures. That's all I know.

 My son has neurophaty and neurosis and rds in left foot. They put him on neurontin about 6 yrs ago and he passed out twice on it and it made him feel nutty and light headed and weird. So IT IS ON HIS    CANNOT TAKE LIST

HE JUST takes vicaden when the pain gets so bad he cannot stand it..even that doesnt work..so in a month or so   off comes the foot..finally

I think it is used in dogs for SEIZURES>..and Pain   .. read below

Gabapentin is used for the treatment pain in dogs and cats. It may also be used in the treatment of seizure disorders.

thanks everyone,
My gsd has been diagnosed with spondilosis, they want to give her gabipentin for pain, I guess in low doses it has been a successful treatment in cats and dogs.  I guess i'll kick this medication around for a few more days before I decide one way or the other.  Thanks again

  Eddy;
 I have spondi myself, but in stage 3 and my chiropracteer told me to quit lifting anything over 6 lgs and to quit all my stupid activities like riding lawnmower on hills and training dogs and lifting anything for long periods.

I do not take anything yet as not needed if I obey the rules..Mine is lower bottom 4 are discenigrading...do not want wheel chair or surgery so I do try to not lift and try to keep rested when I get to hurting.

I would be like you and wonder what to do. Is dog showing hurt?  When Yap had his 3rd disc found to be touching and it was obvious he was in lots of pain as his head went sideways and he cried, they put him on  a different pain pill, Rimadyl,  but it was dangerous to his liver. I had to give it to him as he was in  severe pain all of a sudden from 4 yrs back having been hit by a truck at a NHRA race and no one thought to do a spine xray..he had a chipped elbow and that was fixed..one night he came to me with paralized look and crying in pain..rushed him to vet to find out his verebrae was almost gone right above the leg and side hit by a truck.

IT may be better than Rimadyl  which was the drug the vet put Yap on..I used it for two months and he got worse and had to be put down...One of the worst days of my life..
