I hope everything turns out OK. You've had all the advice you need about the  upcoming litter. All I'm going to add is, unless you are prepared to neuter or board one of these dogs every time she comes into season (from day one til day 28), you are probably going to have this happen again and again. Most males are very persistent about getting to a female in season and you have any neighborhood dogs that run free to consider too.

Do not beat your self over it. This happens even if you do the best. It happened to me too. So what? Dogs are extremely determined to breed and they will if there is any possible chance. Only negative effect will be that she will stop growing and thus her size is final.
I would not recommend you to put the pups into little swimming pool. It is better to use whelping box:

I build a whelping box  from 2x6 boards. Proper size for GSD is 5x5 feet about 6- 8 inch high.  Collar inside serves as a protector of the pups when the mother pushes them against the wall. However I do not put the collar inside of the box but on the top of it. I recommend about 6 in above the ground if you use 2x6s. Like it is on the picture on this link:

In any case make sure that the box is not  too high or the bitch may hit her teat when she is going in and out of the box  and may get mastitis. I would not go over 8 inch.

All pictures on the internet show boxes too high. Place the box in quiet but to the dog familiar area of the house. Keep her there  over night weeks before the bitrh. One of your bath rooms or spare room would be perfect. Bitch needs to be able to be alone. But you need to have an acces to her.  Most females will stop eating 24 hr before the birth.  Just before the birth ,she willl also start digging and nesting . She will be scratching your carpet or dig in the back yard.
Most birth take many hours.  Let her do what ever  her instincts tell her to do. Let her eat the afterbirth since it contains oxytocin and will help her whelp subsequent pups. You can brake the sack to help the pup to get out. but then leave it alone for the mother to take care of it. Some mothers are too enthusiastic and may lick the pup too much and hurt it. Especially young mother like yours. But there is 99% chance that all will be OK. Birth is not an emergency. Pups can not regulate their temperature for first 3 days . Thus have a heat lamp or heat pad. I prefer heat lamp because pups can find just the right place where the heat is just right by moving to or away from the source of the heat. Temp should be around 90*F. Pups should stay in pile to maintain temperature. In the box put shredded news papers. Not too much only enough to absorb moisture. Paper from old phone book is also very good. Avoid blankets, glossy paper and pillows . Box should be on the tile or concrete. It is easier to clean it then.

By the way if you do not have nursery then  5 x 5 ( or similar dimension) shower stall is also great whelping area. Also it  has dip in the middle which keeps the pups in the pile. It is easy to clean. You can make the lip from PVC pipes like in the picture above.

Hans I appreciated the pics and instructions about the whelping box as I have been looking so my friend could build me one. So you see you did help someone by posting that info--I've looked at others and I like this one the best. By the way does the persian rug just materialize or do you send that? LOL.............

I suggested the baby pool, because from the original post, it seemed that the husband was not interested in helping, and the baby pool configuration is very easy to set-up and can be built for about $25.

Kim, I understand exactly. The last 2 times I whelped them in a big pool and then when they got their eyes open and started moving and learning to eat, I put a door at one end--regular door nd then used  big expen to give them plenty of room. Also made it easier to clean. But I had already told Ray if I found a nice easy one to build would he do it for me. So I printed that out and I'll get him to do it for me this summer sometime. I looked at some online and man it was like reading in greek or something and seemed to have zillions of parts. Geez at least put her in a pool--hubby is talking about letting her have them whereever. That bitch is nothing but a puppy and no telling where syhe might choose to have them. She definately needs someone to keep a close eye on her. I mean they all do but certainly one that age and has no clue.........................Hopefully instinct will be strong cause she doesn't sound like she will have much help.................

vonissk I got the joke with the  Persian rug. But I too alternate several rugs like that in the whelping box. Their function it to ad footing to the pups when they push to nurse. They are better able to put their feet under them and that will help them ( in my opinion) to develop better hips. In nature the floor of the den would be dirt and that is also not slippery. I pull the rug out every day in the morning and throw it over the fence and spray a antibacterial soap an water with little bleach (1 cup per 5 gallon bucket.) on it and hose it and rinse it very  hard . Then I let it dry. I usually alternate several rugs.
