In "The German Shepherd Dog in Word and Picture" on pg 528 Stephanitz describes "tiger marked" "tiger striped" "black stripes or bands on a lighter ground" "striped in the legs" "brown tiger" "striped points along with colour given" Sounds like a pretty good description of brindle to me.

http://www.doggenetics.co.uk/masks.html (From Blitzen's Link: A great Coat Color Explanation source!)

Recessive Red (E Locus)
A dog which is homozygous for recessive red, ee, will be completely red.
This is because the recessive red gene, in effect, gives the skin cells a disability (but not a harmful one!) - it stops them from being able to produce eumelanin.

Recessive red, although recessive in its own series, is dominant over almost everything else. Dominant black, sable, tan points, wolf grey, merle, and any other pattern with black in it will be turned to solid red by the recessive red gene. It's impossible to know from looking at a recessive red dog whether it carries sable, tan points, brindle, or any other A or K locus gene.

The intensity of phaeomelanin (red pigment) is now thought to be controlled by a newly discovered locus - "I"
. It is not known how the Intensity locus works as yet, but it causes the difference between Irish Setter red and the cream/ivory of some German Shepherd Dogs (White Shepherd), and everything inbetween.

Also interesting :)
Genetic testing on Samoyeds has found them to be homozygous for both recessive red (ee) on the E locus and recessive black (aa) on the A or Agouti Locus. ,

For Sunsilver: There is a great explanation of the hobo (Reverse mask) markings on this page as well. It is called Urajiro, and the genetics of it are not yet explained.

All there explained on the site you posted a link to.

It would be really nice if you shared the names and/or Pedigrees of some of these GSD brindles with us!

According to the entry of COLOR:  sgestrl:::::   description is a WARM NEUTRAL color with stripping....so that is BRINDLE>...some things take extra research,,,,and it is written in many books and articles about what was called   in todays ENGLISH   BRINDLE>>....   in Germany that is not the word used but means and is descriptive of same thing....BRINDLE<<<<<

As much as I know...no genetic formulas in my brain..I hated math...so Genetics plus and minus is FOREIGN to this lady...I just take the facts on FAITH..

Germans use the word SABLE to mean    :::::2 colored hair...one hair two colors..
A sable dog is one with whole body covered with two colored hairs ie Sable,.,,now there are other additions as a BLANKET SABLE or  Patterned Sables meaning another color on tips or ears and a almost blanked pattern on having feet with red boots or lighter brown boots

Ang -  yes;  but I do wish Max had ascribed names and pedigrees to all those dogs he described thus !

Liberatore K9

The descriptions were general, in reference to acceptable colors in the breed, not specific as to individual dogs.

Precisely.  Think of the queries he could have solved, if he had only said which dogs he was referring to. Wink Smile
