Breed report

"Horand embodied for the enthusiasts of that time the fulfillment of their fondest dreams. He was big for that period, between 24" and 24 1/2", even for the present day a good medium size, with powerful frame, beautiful lines, and a nobly formed head. Clean and sinewy in build, the entire dog was one live wire. His character was on a par with his exterior qualities; marvelous in his obedient fidelity to his master, and above all else, the straightforward nature of a gentleman with a boundless zest for living. Although untrained in puppy hood, nevertheless obedient to the slightest nod when at this master's side; but when left to himself, the maddest rascal, the wildest ruffian and incorrigible provoker of strife. Never idle, always on the go; well disposed to harmless people, but no cringer, mad about children and always in love. What could not have been the accomplishments of such a dog if we, at that time, had only had military or police service training? His faults were the failings of his upbringing, never of his stock. He suffered from a superfluity of unemployed energy, for he was in Heaven when someone was occupied with him and was then the most tractable of dog." ~Captain von Stephanitz Originator of the breed

(S.V. 1) V Horand von Grafrath (Hektor Linksrhein) sired many great dogs as you can readily imagine, but the most important of his get was 1900/01 SGR Hektor von Schwaben. Hektor in turn sired V Beowulf (Sonnenberg), Heinz von Starkenburg, and Pilot III. V Beowulf (Sonnenberg) and Pilot SZ111 were brothers out of Thekla I von der Krone, who was by V Horand von Grafrath (Hektor Linksrhein). These Three Sons of 1900/01 SGR Hektor von Schwaben were the great triumvirate which bore the fruit of the master breeder's seed.

I'd say it's 100% - over many generations meaning thousands of dogs, you can't avoid him. Basically he is "The" Foundation dog. Likewise I'd bet his near-descendent Flora (Berkemeyer) has at least 90% if not 100%.

Thank you for posting this. Altho I am a novice, I find it very interesting.

If I am doing it correctly, I can trace my current GSD bloodlines back to this boy.

Whelped Jan 1, 1895.

Horand/Hektor isn't the 1st GS, only the 1st registered. If you look at his pedigree, you'll see his ancestors as well as other earlier ancestors of the breed were back-registered then in low numbers.

As to how does his color play in, Horand is not the only ancestor of the GS, and even if he was, it's possible he had other genes to throw black & tan from his ancestors (as well as white).

This IS the very first GSD....he was the first dog to ever be registered as a GSD (note I only type that in English, Horand was of course registered as a Deutscher Schaferhunde which is the German name of our breed)

I wonder were the very very first GSD is.

But I wonder how Horrand produces black colors and saddle and eventually our infamous red and black.

Over a hundred years that changed. I wonder what will change over this century.

Surely sabka baap this dog is...gud note is written by d owner here. hats off to ur contribution to d gsd world of today.

This is a dog pedigree, used by breeders and breed enthusiasts to see the ancestry and line-breeding of that individual dog. The pedigree page also contains links to the dogs siblings and progeny (if any exist). For dog owners with purebred dogs this is an excellent resource to study their dog's lineage.
