Thank you for the information.  One of the things you said has me confused..."Kaiser in the Off TOPIC thread on the PINK porch , about Ice Cream, had hot spots at 7 months old and owner put him immediatly on raw diet so it was not hereditary it was food. DO not know what dgfood he fed but he gave it up for raw..Healthiest dog in Caddo Mills Texas still "   Do you think food allergies are NOT hereditary?   If not why do you think that?  I don't know...that's why I'm asking.
Also...OF COURSE one should research pedigrees and know lineage before purchasing a puppy....but as Hexe pointed out....when $$$$ is involved honesty gets bent (sometimes).  It seems to mee that allergies would be a flaw easily hidden or easily blamed on someone else (as you dealt with).  How would one discover allergies running through a breeding program without complete access to vet records or perhaps all previous clients?  Hips are documented...DM now also etc....nothing for allergies or even "overall health" at a certain age.

Jenni, I have to shake my head often at the things you spout as absolute truth that are hardly debatable and controversial among experts in the field because of severe lacking evidence.  I'm not saying you are right or wrong, only bringing to light your confidence on this topic is not warranted.

Do you mind expanding on what you said with the research articles you have found that "rais(ing) generations of dogs in unnatural environments and you'll pay the price in the genes soon enough" and "environment becomes genes".  I don't want a website, I want the actual research article published in a peer reviewed journal.  I always enjoy a good read.

  YEs, allergies are documented at the vet that you can ask the breeder for  the health records of the sire and dam of the pups the litter is out of...YOU can ask and all breeders of reputation can call the vet and ask any questions they want.

  THe breeder has to give vet permission to talk to them..I give people my vets number and say ASK AWAY.

 A recent lady on here bought REX , one of my males I did not breed. SHE had mega problems with him...eating, thought he was skinny , and he sweated and stumk like dog, no spots, hair in tack and she called my vet. THEY were happy to tell her, Rex had been in 5 months before and he was slender, at a weight of x xx and they did not have any problems except he had a heat exhaustion chasing a female in heat.

My vets know what I have and if I have a problem they know it. 

FOOD allergies are very much handed down ...  THE Food you feed is very much a contributing factor to the hair, body and the condition of the dog..IF you feed a dry kibble with corn and meals and nothing of substance,,,,yu get hot spots..WE all know that. GERMANS are famous for it..IF you can feed that dog quality raw food or a diet of quality which I consider raw better than any other, then the problem is solved..IF you do not need meds, and it goes away and is corrected it is not hereditary

The male or female that scratches, has spots, hair loss , dull hair,   ear infections, bad breath and diahrea and you cannot stop it but bandaide it with meds...you have a nightmare and it is hereditary.

YOU can ask for health records on any dog or litter you intend to buy..Go in person visit the kennel, look at the male and females ask for a list of former dog , puppy owners of said breeding partners that produced these litters.   WHY can not you pick up a phone and call the list...because most people are shy and are intimidated by questioning...YOU  would question the boy and his parents of the boy your daughter is about to get married to would you not???why is breeding not as Important as your daughter mating with a human being..WHAT she marries she produces...in the kids.

God gave us a brain and a choice to marry into family with mega heretitary problems or stay single until you find a person who has more to offer.  Sorry but German shepherd lines are the very same. GO do a lot of asking..You cannot hide health problems but you must VISIT the dogs and look and use your knowledge or take a reputible dog judge with you. Schutzhund clubs all over the usa have those men and women in them that breed or have knowledge. I know many of them so just ask..

Skin problems and allergy problems people talk about to everyone they meet and they are very popular so get busy and start asking...before you buy a dog of any breed.

Dogs are the same...all that crap in dry food is acidic...meat raw fish and chicken are less acidic...beef is acidic...check out the facts..

I am with you but here is the thing...and I will use my dog as an example.  I was the one who discovered his allergy and I was the one who changed him to raw.  I was the one that "fixed"him.  Now...If I didn't tell my vet about the allergies, he would have never known.  So if I were to breed him and not tell anyone...how would they know.  He obviously looks amazing now!  Or lets say my vet discovered the allergy and I fixed it with raw....it would now be fixed, and documented...so if I were a "shady" breeder, could I not switch vets and "start over", then not tell the second vet about allergies?  I guess it is harder with hips because of outside organizations and the documenting (not to say x-rays can't be switched). Also, I am wondering if a dog is good on raw food but allergic to kibble / chemicals etc....should it really be called an "allergy"?  Just thinking out loud here.

  My son cannot eat tomatoes...he had severe     Diahrea....but he also has years of Meds for a crushed foot, in pain 24/6 so his immune and his system is compromised.


  Ok on a pup or dog...number one thing to consider...HOW was your pup fed from his onslaught of life in the womb of his dam...was the mom fed good food or crap...so we can say half in half maybe...or maybe his great grand parents had hair loss and bad dry skin who knows..but if you can fix the diet of humans and we see it done every day...OUR body is abuse with processed food from the time we are born..

PUPS are effected from day one by people ...who do not study foods and environment. I happen to study it and I am a person who pushes the correct foods or the ones that are better than the other processed.

I use to eat all those bad foods...but my health has always been SUPER> MY mom didnt feed me processed foods..being a yankee...she fed me salads, fruits, meat that was cooked in a steamer with carrots and potatoes and onions...she fed me liver, brocoli , cabbage, licorice, fruits and things most people do not even like...but I am thankful I was fed from a little flowerbed of cucumbers , tomatoes with little salt..she preached at me constantly about sugar and salt...so I use sparingly. SHE never had breads, cornbread, processed cheeses, or anything like that...no sweets but once a month when the ss check came..I was raised with no dad as he was killed in AMOCO explosion and no money ever given to my mom so I was raised on SS..can you say   stretch..........a ...dollar...so thank GOD I was raised on foods not processed..THE neighbors gave us yard eggs, and meat from their pastures...liver and onions was three times a week...no gravey made...just natural onion gravey off the meat drippings.

SO that being thrown in,  what your pup had before he was born thru his MOM in her diet may also be affect.

NOW like humans, dogs can eat pure food and the body will straighten itself out and work properly.. BUT be quiet...do not tell the vets....you take away their  MONEY ....  READ READ>...eat what is right in your own body and do for your dogs the same.....vinegar is great for dogs,,,garlic on food is great for the dogs....clean ears with vinegar...clean your house with vinegar and peroxides//

get rid of carpets and have tile or wood floors...USE a vacuum cleaner with water resorvoir to catch all the pollens and flying particles when you vaccuum...

Do not use chemicals on yard..use DE     use things from naturals and you will live longer and wont itch and won't be sick..NOW if you have an inherited disease...I cannot address that one..BUT If you study hard...a lot of the diseases are from immune compromising...WHAT and HOW did that happen????  ever know a kid that won't eat vegetables..or onions or garlic in food or cheyene pepper on meat or anything but cheetos , sodas and mack and cheese?????  I see them all the time...obese people and I am a lady who is not skinny , I carry a few extra pounds and always have...but I have no health problems unless yu call acid making a problem and It is...but I have conquored it... Apple cidar vinegar  two times a day and change my diet drastically..when I go off my diet and eat processed foods ....more acid pops up..

Michele, I don't really see what you're questioning. Are you debating that environment changes and impacts DNA/genetics/expression of genes over time?  If so, I don't really see a point in discussing this further. You have a right to your own beliefs and I have no desire to change them.

We are talking about epigenetics here, the direct effect of environment on the DNA and RNA that causes changes in one generation from the next and can affect multiple generations. Genetics go way, way beyond dominance/recessive, heterozygous/homozygous and polygenes. Part of what epigenetics and RNA does is switches genes on/off and controls how extensively a gene may be expressed.
Take the longhair dog for an easy example, we've all seen longhairs that looked practically shorthaired, then there are moderately longhair and extremely longhaired dogs...they all are homozygous recessive longhair, but the RNA controls just how much that gene is expressed.
RNA is much more susceptible to changes by environment affects than DNA (though DNA is still certainly susceptible.)

Professor Randy Jirtle, well published in scholarly scientific journals, especially in epigenetics. One of his articles was on a study done with mice which showed that they could improve genetic health of the offspring by feeding the female mice a better diet. They paired up mice with the same genetic disease (in this case, mice that were genetically engineered to be morbidly obese and prone to diabetes and cancer and were short-lived) and just before breeding they improved the diet of the female mice by enriching it in methyl donors (for those of you who don't know, it's something commonly found fruits and veggies.) The diseased mice produced offspring that were exceptionally healthier; lean-bodied, not prone to cancer or diabetes and had longevity. The healthy offspring mice still carried the gene for obesity, but the gene was turned off.

An article published in the PNAS journel on a study led Dr. David Crews showed that when rats were exposed to a certain fungicide it caused changes in the expressions of certain DNA that affected neurological and behavioral changes for 3 generations removed from the original exposure. (that is, only the first generation was exposed to the fungicide and yet the deleterious affects were still being seen down through 3 generations of progeny.) The changes were not coded into the rat's DNA, but instead the RNA changed the expression of the DNA.

You can look up about the 2007 AICR conference and the various doctors and scientists who made separate presentations all showing research on how diet had direct epigenomical affect on the health of generations.

There are thousands more articles on research that proves environment has direct influence on genetics.

Here is a very simplistic explanation below; a very shortened version of a scientific theory I read some time ago. The following is not an end-all, be-all to having good genetics, obviously there are plenty of other factors.
It's a form of natural selection all on it's own. When a body is exposed to damages and poor environment then it assumes that it's environment cannot adequately support it's kind. A bloodline can semi-self-destruct, each generation that is exposed to negative environmental factors gives the next generation health problems (via the RNA turning on "bad" genes) to shorten the life-span and reduce the population. When a generation is given a healthy lifestyle and environment, then the body assumes that environment is ripe for populating and the RNA starts turning off the bad genes and turning on the good ones so that the subsequent generation(s) can live longer, healthier lives (and potentially produce more offspring.)
