some breeder s seem to be able to ship a dog from one area to another even if there is no direct flights
do they usually just have a hired person there at a connection spot that transfers the dog from one plane to another for them?

I know that with Continental and Delta, dogs are transferred from plane to plane by the airlines. These are the 2 that I use... not so much Delta as we've had problems.

Ship with an airline who has a "pet safe" or similar program - Continental is IMO the best one in this country - Lufthansa is probably the best of all for international flights. The shipper needs to make sure that the connection(s) are long enough to allow for a flight running late, so the dog won't miss the connection - the airlines do take care of dogs (ie kennel them, walk them, feed/water) if necessary but of course that is not ideal. One connection is expected, anything more than that is not ideal but sometimes necessary. I am shipping a puppy from east coast to Alaska this week - two connections and a very long flight time - but Continental will get him out of his crate at least once during one of the two connections, if not both.
The other options I have used are van transportation (Royal Canine Express) which has worked out well. There is a pet-only air service, but with limited airports serviced.

Agree. I trust Continental very much, Lufthansa very much, and Delta not at all. I have used Pet Airways and the only downside to them is that they don't serve enough airports.
I have never had more than one connection; I've been able to get creative a few times and find a way around them every time w/Continental.

I have used a van transport service and was extremely happy. David offers door to door service. At a very fair price.
Communication was excellent and I was given an update at every gas stop, potty stop and more. David even took Hero to a park and they went on a mile long walk along the way. Hero came home he was happy and healthy and even a little bit spoiled.
Some friends of mine also use him and are also very happy with his service.
If you're interested, PM me.

hey this is shocking though i wanted a cat shipped from america to canada and was told that if the flight is not direct with no stops it cant be done because the cat cant walk itself from plane to plane
i guess with cats it may be diff? Or maybe in north america it is not the same? They do not offer the same stuff as those international airplanes do

Did you do this through Continental? I've asked about shipping to Canada and it is the same as shipping here in the States. I wouldn't think it any different.... a dog can't walk itself from plane to plane either.
The cat would have to be shipped as cargo and booked as such. It can not be in the cabin under a seat because you are right, there is no one to move the animal from plane to plane.
