Is oxytocin safe to give the mother dog after whelping? I've read that the shot can be very dangerous (like causing uterine rupture), but is that only when a puppy is still inside? Is it safe to give when all the puppies are out (to clean out any placentas left inside)?

I would not recommend administering an oxytocin shot post whelping. Uterus goes through enough stress during labor and delivering puppies. Using an oxytocin shot post whelping for cleaning purposes (retained placentas) is not necessary. Your bitch will expel any foreign objects from inside her on her own. Oxytocin should only be administered by a veterinarian as a last resort to help the struggling bitch push out any remaining puppies.

If your bitch is looking normal during labor your bitch is fine. As a breeder you have to be able to physically tell if your dog is doing good or not. Your bitch will rest between 1-3 hours between delivering puppies. If she takes any longer than 3.5-4 hours take your bitch to the vet immediately. I offer my dogs cottage cheese in between puppies and resting. Cottage cheese will give them strength to push and stimulate contractions.

Remember, the most important thing you can do during delivery is staying calm.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Very Good Topic . If your Not Taught By your Vet DO NOT use Oxytocin, Its a Very Dangerous Drug, You Can Blow A Females Uterus, You Can Kill The Bitch and her Pups. ( I'M NOT KIDDING ITS A DANGEROUS DRUG..) I bred and Showed Pekingese for 30 yrs. The Puppies Heads are Large And Yes You Need this Drug. BUT you Have to check up inside Your Bitch to Feel For The Pup up in the birth canal . It can be trapped, to big to Pass or Stuck. .1 Shot Should pass that pup If not Rush to Vet immediately . Ive helped pups that were stuck to be born, A puppy can travel down one horn , but go up the other horn, Which is a C-section no Question ,,Ive also Been in the Surgery Room and Helped My vet By getting my Pups to Breath as he Delivered Them By C-section . All my Breeding's Were Artificial Insemination. I had to Sell all my Pekingese After I was Hit By A Drunk Driver . I could not do what i use to do. Now that i have Shepherds Ive never used Oxytocin, but I've had to turn a pup to be born. There is no reason to give it to a Large Dog or 90% of Medium to Small breeds. You can Not Play Vet. You have to be taught and you have to pay attention and Listen to your Vet. If you Use this Drug and Destroy your Bitch , kill Her & or Pups You have No business Using This Drug Or Breeding or Owning Dogs. I did leave out one Thing If after you Bitch Delivered her pups and 1-2 days later she is Passing Black Blood That is a Sign Of retained placentas, get her to a vet she needs a clean out Shot (Oxytocin ) and a antibiotic to clear possible infection... Not All Placentas is Passed !
