i would like to submit this picture of Horst von Boll sourced from Garrett book (also found in E. Hart published GSD book) This photo is not on Horsts pictures nor galleries

i was intrigued after reading the part that says his Dam was a "yellow dog with dark mask". Was the author referring to the common color of a Belgian Mallinois?

I doubt it. Did you read the description of the dog pictured? He's described as being a 'yellow dog' as well. That's a term often used for what many people consider to be the 'classic' GSD---light tan [thus 'yellow] with a dark saddle, muzzle and some type of mask [could be a reverse mask, could be partial mask, could be no mask at all]. The lighter dogs in each picture below both fall into the 'yellow dog' category.

Sire Line:
Hektor von Schwaben x Nelly Eislingen
Dam Line:
Flora vom Neckerursprung
These dogs all trace back to Horand von Grafrath and then, of course, Greif (Sparwasser) - white.
Loria vom Brenztal is a bit shrouded in mystery... Munko von Boll is registered as sggew (black, tan, dingy) and as far as I can tell the white gene was not passed by Loria at all. Loria seemed to have gotten a bad rap... interesting that the author says "she did seem to pass on the color". I don't see it. Now Rigo vom Brenztal (bred to Loria), yes... his great grandparents were Hektor von Schwaben and Thelka von der Krone (both sired by Horand von Grafrath).

Thanks for clarifying that yellow dogs are the light TANs&BLACK and not at all related to common Fawn B. Malinois.
im not even halfway reading the Ebook and i am also getting curious about the "plush" coats being an after effect of breeding Long stock coats with a certain Kuno Weitwig line?

Schwarz Grau Gewolkt is not Black, Tan, Dingy.
It's Black, Sable/Grey, "Dingy Clouded".

Actually sggew is black, tan dingy (clouded), but that is not how Horst is listed. g=tan gr=gray
He is listed in the SV studbook as
hgrggew
hell graugelb gewolkt
light gray yellow clouded
my German is not that good, but I got the color and words from the SV Studbooks
