Hello everyone, I would have a couple questions to you regarding my GSD.

I am originally from Romania, but live In Canada, the questions I will ask would need a solution in Canada.

So, a few months ago I bought a German shepherd puppy from a local breeder, he promised me to send over the pups paperwork, but I never herd of him again! Not only that, he didn't wanted to disclose the parents names, meanwhile I got the pup and I am happy as hell with him, a very smart dog, nice looking show line, intelligent and protective with my 15 months old daughter!

I have been researching a lot lately because I would like to breed the dog and would like to know how long would be the process to go through all the exams to get the dog in the right direction?

The pup is 5 months now, the breeder said he will email the papers, as he was transferring the father registration from Europe, he was imported.

I am just kind of lost in the situation as I have no idea what's the next step to take?

Ps. I do know I got fooled like a kid when promised to have all the paperwork send by mail....

You should try to contact http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/userinfo.html?userid=23611 .

Sorry I was busy and did not see this sooner. This is so uncalled for and very rude.

This type of bashing will not be tolerated Western Rider

That's a bit uncalled for.

Swarenendu, sorry for not dropping out of my mother with all the knowledge like yourself!

Meanwhile... wanna be or not, I am not used too much for the Canadian system and I felt that I am discussing with a decent breeder.

My other pup comes from a decent breeder and has all the paperwork up to date.

I asked for an advice to avoid future problems, but if that cannot be given just please close the topic, thanks!

I think I did cross a line with that link. Sincere apologies to Sunsilver, nothing but humour was intended.

I'm not laughing, Swarnendu, but apology accepted.

I do like to help educate people who are new to the breed, rather than attacking them for their ignorance, the way some people do.

That being said, I've been in a situation similar to the OP, and it took a very long time to get the father's registration transferred to the AKC, then get CKC papers once I had the AKC papers for my pup. The sire will have to be DNA tested, plus the original SV papers have to be signed off and sent to the owner/importer of the stud. Photos of the dog are also required, then once Dad's registration is sorted out, the puppies can be registered. So, lots of patience may be necessary! Oh, and if the breeder seems to be dragging his heels, a phone call to CKC may speed things up. They take a very dim view of people selling supposedly purebred, registered dogs, then not following through with the papers.  Due to the original owner not signing off the correct section of the father's SV papers, and DNA swabs getting lost, it took me 9 months to get my pup registered.  Confused Smile

As for breeding your dog, there are a LOT of things to consider. Like the number of purebred dogs surrendered to shelters every year, and often being euthanized....

In Germany, a GSD must first get the BH, a basic obedience degree. Then comes IPO1 (or Sch.1) Then the dog needs to be examined and tested by a koermeister, who will decide if the dog is suitable for breeding. If the dogs doesn't get a Kkl rating, as being suitable, the SV will not register its puppies.

Over here on this side of the pond, you can do whatever you bloody well want to. The dog can have one testicle, hanging ears and horrible conformation, and AKC/CKC will still take your money and register any puppies it produces as purebred.

The ETHICAL way to do it is to follow the SV system. That means joining a schutzhund club, and beginning basic training. You can start now, if you want, because since you are both new to the sport, it's going to take awhile to learn what you need to know. (IIRC, dogs must be 18 mo. before they can get the BH.)  ANY dog can be titled in IPO, they do not have to be purebred, or have papers, and the training will help you get to know your dog and strengthen the bond between you. It will also make him a better dog to live with.

You also need to do health testing. At an absolute minimum, hips and elbows need to be x-rayed. If done by OFA, this can only be done when the dog turns 2 years old.

As you get more experience with the breed, and the sport, you may realize your dog just doesn't have 'the right stuff' to be a stud dog. Like many posters on this board, I've owned German shepherds for several decades, and have yet to breed a single litter. Breeding takes a LOT of time, money and dedication. You also need to have a clear goal in mind. Ask yourself 'why am I breeding my dog? Is it going to better the breed?

LOTS more I could say on this topic, but that's enough for now!

This thread here gives some more thoughts on how to decide if your dog is breedworthy: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/community.read?post=888242-coco   And Swarn, I didn't come right out and tell Coco's owner his dog wasn't breedworthy because the rest of you were doing such a GREAT job of it!

Rdt, it's honestly possible you'll get the papers- depending on how efficient everyone is in the chain, foreign transfers can take months. I would be polite but assertive and keep trying. Don't just give up assuming you've been scammed. It's possible, of course, but it's also possible that someone just took too long to do their part of the registration.

What Jenni said...

Until you get those papers, unfortunately, the ball is in the breeder's court, and there's not an awful lot you can do.
When you DO get them, I'd check to make sure you are listed as the new owner. If anything needs to be changed, you can find the necessary forms on the CKC website. I've found them pretty helpful, and you can phone/email them if there's something you don't understand.

Would you mind telling us who the breeder is? It will give me a better idea of what the chances are you will actually get those papers.

PM me if you don't want to post it here.

You could also make a POLITE post telling name of your dog. where you got him from, was it an Ad from here, show pictures and mention that you are waiting for papers asking how long it will take.

Breeder may get back to you with information and keep you in the loop.

It can take months to unfortunetly to get papers from some breeder others are very quick. Hope this turns out good for you.
