Some good breeders/trainers do sell dogs there. Just do the research on the person if you see something you like.

Have you taken the time to look at working dogs at work in perhaps a club setting? It sounds like you have very little experience with this. Get to know what type of traits you like in a dog. Some of these people are very good at sales and will just happen to have the dog that fits the bill. Also always see the dog in person. Never buy through the mail. I read of too many bad experiences. Take someone familar with working dogs. Have the dog worked by a stranger to the dog in a unfamiliar setting. This is very different than the dogs buddy the trainer on his field. Buying dogs is like buying a used car. Lots of misrepresentation. What area r you in? Try to find a dog near to you. No reason to travel 1/2 way across the country.
BTW I prefer not to buy puppies, too much of a risk. Also do not like to buy pretrained dogs. Some times with these it is difficult to differenciate between the genetics of the dog and the good training. Bad genetics can be masked, to an extent. Ultimately when it the s%#$ gets thick an unsound dog will flee. The perfect situation for me would be a breeder who keeps back puppies to see how they develope. Some breeders do this, also this dog would have zero ob training. A dog just allowed to be a dog , and kept in a clean environment. A young adult with a clean slate if you will. No bad training to retrain.
If I were to guess you have little experience and dont really know what you want in a dog, even if you think that you do. So I would venture to say that you want a mediun drive dog, nothing with too high of a prey drive, just average, but also definately not a couch potatoe. Very confident dog so that there will be no fear biting of innocent peeps. And finally the slighest sliver of a defensive edge. This should not be too hard to find. Will be a deterent with out PP training, and lively enough so that if you decide to train he will be fine.
Also beware of the shy-sharp dog (fear biter) that the seller tries to pass off as a super serious dog.
