An imageWaiting on pins & needles for word on how my hubby's girl Lil' Bit does in surgery today. Over the weekend she began having a firm, rounded abdomen & began dropping weight despite eating & pooping well. She was bright & happy, no fever. Went to the vets yesterday & after an ultrasound confirmed a closed pyometra, our vet stated she would come in today, her usual day off, & operate to resolve this. Any positive thoughts or prayers you can share would be appreciated. I feel very culpable right now. If I had spayed her she wouldn't be going through this now. 😞

Get well soon, Lil Bit! Don't beat yourself up on what could have been done to prevent an unknown. You are giving Lil Bit the best care that she needs, now! Your love and devotion to your dogs is always evident.

An imageThank you Bee! I still feel I should have known better or that somehow I could have prevented this. just got off the phone with the vet, Bitty's out of surgery & awake. Dr. Newell said her uterine horns were both torsioned & that any other dog would have died. Not our Bitty. Born almost 24 hours after the rest of the litter, she's been a fighter from birth!

Glad to hear that the surgery went well, and hope for a speedy and complete recovery.

Speedy recovery ahead for Lil Bit. Sounds like you just caught it in time. Surprised she had no fever, fast healing. Nan

Nothing you can do to prevent incidents like this - and spaying could have caused other problems.

She seems to be a tough "lil" lady, all the best from me!

Blimey, Jacquie, that is mad about both horns being twisted too ! Nobody could have predicted that set of complications, a closed pyo is bad enough. Very glad she is now in recovery. Love and best wishes Bitty-girl. One tough cookie.

Jackie, I posted right after Bee this morning! I don't know where it went! I was saying that if we all had crystal balls, we would always make perfect decisions. You don't know what problems an early spay could have caused, and besides, leaving body parts where they originated does not cause disease in and of itself. You do the best you can with the information you have in front of you. One old vet I like told me not to spay my older girls- his feeling is he would rather operate in case of a pyo than spay proactively and most assuredly cause another problem. I found that interesting from a vet- most don't think that way but he is a very kind, gray-haired man with a pony tail and a ton of experience. So...depending on who you listen to, you'd have done it all exactly right ;)

Glad she is ok so far...fingers continuing to be crossed for you two.

An imageWell she's home. She was so happy to see Carl, the staff at the vets said they couldn't believe that she had a 2 1/2 hour major surgery just 6 hours ago. Her uterus weighed over 12 pounds. 😖 jackie harris

Thank you so much for the well wishes & support. I don't like removing body parts just for convenience, & have advocated for dogs to remain intact with responsible owners...man did I feel awful. And I must say my vet was very nonjudgmental. But I do really appreciate the support, I'm getting flack from family members already. But my dogs come first. ❤️
Thanks again, very much.

ps-Dr. Newell said the infection was encapsulated within the uterus, so we'll cover her with antibiotics but she's hopeful that it hadn't spread at all! That will help her recovery!
