I have been googling and trying to understand what the pedigree for my male means. I showed a friend who said his great grandfather was a 5 time champion and a police dog. I really am not understanding how they figured this out but I thought there were videos online of him in action I saw once upon a time. Is there a link to an ez pedigree decipher?

Here is his pedigree for curiosity sake. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=2302544-jaxtotschlager

Handsome boy you have!
No, his great grandfather, Falco, was not a police dog. He however competed at the LGA, which IMO is much more of an accomplishment.
Unfortunately there is a lot of missing information in your dog's pedigree, such as titles and health scores(if any). Would be a fun project to go and trace all these dogs down and see what info you could find.
Good luck!

Thank you been super busy and haven't gotten around to checking this like I want to. I have talked to my vet about getting his knees and elbows tested. Is there anything else I should test for?

Why are you testing Knees...Elbows? Your boy's Great Great Grandfather was a Champion of Task Force 5X...

POLICE K9, USPCA TRIAL WINNER, 5X GEORGIA K-9 TASK FORCE CHAMPION

Cuba V male

2006
AKC DN13973010
HD-
Sire

You don't know who entered this info and it's a dog with a AKC registration so not sure it's verifiable...This info says that your boy's Great Great Grandfather was a 5X Georgia K-9 Task Force Champion...

But all in all there's very little info on the bottom side (Dam's side) of the pedigree...The top side (Sire's side) has some very nice dogs in it...but it's 5 generations back...

From what I understood German Shepherds are prone to knee problems. I would like to continue with his training but that would influence in what direction I would take it.

Perhaps the OP would like to investigate his dogs hips instead ?

Eddie :  'knee problems' might include:  slipping patella (kneecap),  not often in GSDs;

Cruciate ligament detachment / strain - which is  quite common,  but  not genetic so you can't really test for it in advance.

HIP status, OTOH, is a frequent problem, can be X rayed for at a number of ages, can

lead to real difficulties and you should do your 'homework'  on hips  (and elbows) with

help from this Site.  Do a Search of PDB for Hip Dysplasia, should bring you up a load

of debates on all aspects of the subject.   I think the Site has an eduucational thred on

it too, look under 'Tutorials'.

Linda.
