GSDPack, the breeder actually requested that Ice be tested for it, too.

And even with Lyme ruled out, the research has indicated that just being bitten by a tick, without any disease transmission occuring, can actually cause the individual bitten to develop an allergy to red meats where none previously existed.

As I've said a few times, I feel badly for all parties involved, because no one wanted this.

I had a GSD who had a mild form of EPI.  I sent her blood to TX A&M and they checked several issues.  She was given a special can of meat and one cup of special kibble at her dinnertime.  I put one teaspoon of Viokase and one-eighth teaspoon Tylan powder in her one meal a day.  About once a month she received a shot of B12.

We traveled in my mini van sometimes being gone for three weeks at a time.  It was so easy to package up the number of cans and the number of sandwich bags with her kibble plus maybe another weeks worth of the two items.  I did not need to carry the B 12 as we were gone in between the shot times.  But it was a piece of cake to care for her.  I miss that bossy dog SO much!!!  She I insisted that I keep her busy.  I read her like a book and visa versa.  We were a team!!

Before this beloved girl, I had two that I took to Animal Dermatology Clinic and had them do a skin test as they do with humans.  Then I gave them allergy shots as per a certain schedule.  If one has to travel with them, one can  buy an electric ice box to plug into the car and the motel.

One of the signs of allergies is licking the paws and constant ear infections and licking the stomach.  I am NOT a medical person, but I learned to look for the signs.

I found a GSD dumped on the main streets of a huge city.  He would have been dead in one more week.  Had NO undercoat and little top coat.  He had an all over skin infection that made him smell to high heaven.  I bailed him out of the shelter to have him legally.  Took forever to put a show coat on him and to try to remove from his head the fears put there by terrible abuse.  Could NEVER have him off leash without being fenced in as a fear could come over him and he could flee and forget me!

Had him for eight years and traveled with me and my girl dog.  He was always so pleased to have two ladies with him.  Wonderful boy whom I still miss.

Allergies are an immune system malfunction.  The likely culprit is environmental with vaccinations and/or toxins or environmental conditions that tamper with the immune system being likely causes.  Genetics can play a role in setting up an animal for allergies but environment triggers the reaction to allergins combined with the presence of the allergin.  I for example am not allergic to poison oak or poison ivy but on a few occassions I have had a slight reaction when exposed which is likely a reaction to the allergin plus environment.  The sensitivity to allergins can be temporary, transient, or permanent.  This is why vaccines can be a causative factor in many immune system disorders be they temporary, transient, or permanent.  Vaccines alter the immune system and the body's responses to the environment in ways which have not been researched.  A Canadian study showed that persons taking the widely used influenza vaccine in the year prior to an outbreak of a different strain of influenza were more sensitive to the new strain of influenza.  There is still a lot that is unknown about vaccines and how they alter an INDIVIDUAL immune systems.  All of the safety studies concentrate on overall effectiveness and overall safety but leave out those who either do not benefit or are harmed by vaccine usage.
