Jyl

by Jyl on 04 November 2014 - 06:11

I have been asked by a couple people how Ice is doing..... since I have not posted about him for a long time. So here is goes...

I originally purchased Ice in July of 2013 for IPO.. Since I will be retiring Xena ( the one in my avitar) the end of this year or beginning of next year as she will be 9 in May 2015.

Ice's pedigree.

https://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=1993709-aidan-von-haus-der-pfahler

Well Ice has had some health issues and will not be able to do IPO as I had originally purchased him for... It is a little backwards that my 8.5 year old is healthy and doing IPO and the 19 month old (Ice) cant. I have not posted because I get upset everytime I think about this.. As Ice has the drives and temperment to do IPO.. but not the health to do it.

Ice has bad food allergies. He started having diarrhea and/or very soft stools right after I got him. I had the vet do multiple stool samples to see if he had Giardia or Coccidia... it always came back negative. So we (vet and I) did a few rounds of Fenbendazole just in case there was Giardia. I also tried different foods with Ice...I started thinking, as well as the vet, that Ice was allergic to his food. So I tried a few different grain free and limited ingredient diets with Ice. I gave him 3+ months on each food. When the stool issues did not clear up, I did the food allergy test through Dr. Jean Dodds back in Feb/March. When I got the results back... I was surprised.... Ice is allergic to alot of foods. I also talked to Dr. Dodds several times and she helped me get Ice on the correct grain free diet. She is an AWESOME lady!!! I also watched alot of the videos from Karen Becker(who also trained under Dr. Dodds).... I give Ice coconut oil a few times a week... Ice also get a probiotic daily. Dr Dodds, as well as the videos I watched from Karen Becker, and it was also recommended to me from someone else to do a Candida elimination diet.... which was done... that is part of the reason Ice gets the coconut oil and probiotics.

I have also had Ice on Heartgard Plus since the day I got him.

As for Ice' allergies... he is allergic too...
Turkey
Chicken
Duck
Rabbit
Fish
Barley

Corn

Wheat
Rice

Oatmeal

(No I will NOT ever or have feed Ice a food that has corn or wheat in it!!!)

He does not move correctly or stand correct. He also has a limp to his gait when he moves. Ice started having lameness on his left rear leg when he was about 8 months old.. At first I thought it was pano, as he did have pano off and on in his front legs. So I waited to see if it would go away.. when it did not I did the hip/elbow xrays on Ice at 10 months... His hips were ok (right is better than his left hip), and elbows were good... Well the xrays showed NO PANO in the rear legs... that is when a red flag went off for me that this may be something more. Well I was hopeing that this was pano and would go away.... so when Ice limp never went away I had more xrays done at my vet back in May... and also went back to the vet that I have the OFA's done at and had him take more xrays as well, and these were sent to a Radiologist...  NO ONE saw any pano. Ice does have a TV (Transitional Vertebra)... Ice has had lameness since around Sept of last year. I have spent close to $1500 in vet bills on him, since I got Ice in July of 2013, from the allergies and lameness he has. He has had multiple ear infections and yeast infections in his feet and around his anus. Now that I and Dr. Dodds have Ice on a correct diet... he is doing better. He will never move correctly or have a normal gate. I had originally purchased Ice for IPO. There is NO WAY he can do that... poor dog would be so lame he could not walk if I made him do the wall and jumps and the protection work.

Since there is no way Ice will be able to be my IPO competition dog I have had to do things to keep his very active mind BUSY....So I am just doing some fun OB with Ice and tracking. I will do the BH and maybe some tracking titles as well as some AKC OB and maybe Rally. I have thought about doing some scent work with Ice as well. He needs a JOB! Ice is a dork, but a very loving one...lol. He is at full blown teenager stage right now....  well he is 19 months, so that is expected.

Since Ice will not be able to do IPO I will get another dog soon so that I can continue doing club level IPO. Even though I will be getting another dog I will give Ice a quality and loving home here, no matter his health issues. He is a family member!

Here are a few pictures of Ice....

Boy, what a shame..he is a beautiful dog. I hope this doesn't happen again to you. I cohldn t even imagine the disappointment  you are feeling.

I do hope you have been offered a replacement pup after such heartache.

I wish  the best for you Jyl on your next dog.

Thank you. With my next dog I will get one that is a little older than Ice was when I got him. I will get one that is 6-8 months.... that way I can see hip/elbow and back xrays of the dog.

Aw, hell, Jyl, what a rough break for both of you... you had such great plans for the two of you, and he showed so much potential, too.  Broken Heart  I'm so sorry to hear your guy has these issues, and have much respect for your commitment to him as a forever dog, not just a 'for trials and titles and trophies' dog.

Vk4gsd,

Thanks.... it is very disappointing that Ice has these issues. Thanks for the complement on him.... I think he is a beautiful dog too. Sure looks a lot like his sire Drago.

As for the lameness, my vet as well as the other one and I feel that the lameness is caused by the TV (Transitional Vertebra). I have done a lot of research on a TV and from what I have read as well as the information that I got about it from the vet in most cases a TV does not cause any issues... but there are some rare instances were it does. Ice is one of these cases... Usually a TV is just an extra vertebra in the spine... but from what I read and have been told there are cases where a TV will take on a form of the left or right hip, which in these rare cases will cause lameness.

wow...sorry to hear that Jyls....he is gorgeous looking dog...how will TV influence his aging process? or is this as bad as it will get?

by joanro on 04 November 2014 - 14:11

Sorry to hear about the problems with Ice.  Not disputing or arguing, but could you point out the TV in your xray from Ice's prelims, and did OFA check the box for TV or does one need to request an evaluation specifically for TV for OFA to look for it?

Ice is a beautiful and well loved dog. He has a great forever home inspite of his not being able to participate in IPO as JYL hoped we would. If I bred this dog, and I do not know who did BTW, there would be no doubt that I would give her another dog at NC and if I were a breeder and had a litter, I'd hope she would want one of my puppies. I've never found it  easy to find loving forever homes for dogs, especially dogs that didn't live up to their buyers' expectations.

Jyl, regarding the lameness, have you checked him for Lyme? I ask because I bred a pup who had lameness like you're describing at the same age and thanks to his super owner, she dug and dug and found the cause.
