Dawn G. Bonome

by Dawn G. Bonome on 25 October 2014 - 19:10

Anyone have to take their German Shepherd off of Orijen? My girl had to be taken off of it as it was too rich for her. Got the runs very bad! Bloodwork was done, all normal.... NO EPI thank God!! She is on Low Residue from the Vet, and also a probiotic is added to her food. I do not want to keep her on Low Res for the rest of her life. Any suggestions?

Hope all is well with everyone. Have not been on here for quite a long time.

Had a similar problem. Put dog on Orijen Six Fish and all is OK now.

I had the same issue... although it was with the Large Breed Puppy.. When I got my pup Ice in July of 2013 he was on the Orijen.... he had really bad diarrhea on it here. I got him off it after a few weeks of constant diarrhea.... it cleared up.

I ended up putting Ice on a low protein food until the diarrhea got better... Ice also has severe food allergies now.. So I am very careful what he eats.

Although Orijen is probablly the best quality food you can buy, It was just to rich for my dog as well.  Losse stools on it.  NBD, no one food will work for all dogs.   I use Best Breed Working dog Diet and it works great for him.

I'm curious how much everyone is feeding that's having these problems with it. I feed Orijen to 5 GSDs and 2 Pit Bulls and we have zero issues. I also switch formulas and never have any transitional problems.

I am also curious about the amounts everyone is feeding, are you following amounts on the bag?  Also is the 6 fish better for any problem dogs?  Do any of you have senior dogs on the 6 fish?  If so any skin issues, anal fistulas,  cysts, etc.  Any arthritis with seniors or others?  Do you use any supplements with any of the Orijens?  Am thinking about adding to my dog food regime.  Am just researching now so may take me a little time.  Do any of you use any raw meat with kibble or separate?

Sounds so far like this food might work.  Thanks in advance  Nan

PS:  any dental issues, tarter/calculus buildup, loose teeth, gum problems?    Does anyone add any probiotics?

I feed Orijen six fish to my past male who had severe digestive problems and it worked very well. I feed my current female a blend of Orijen six fish and regonal red. I also add some ground buffalo. No problems

Like Jenni78 , I too switch up the formula rotation on a continual bassis with my two GSDs. Because of the high protein content i have to break my feedings up to twice a day and feed roughly 1.5 cups per feeding to each dog. If i do a once a day feeding, their stools are pretty loose :(  Have you tried switching to Acanna yet? Still the same great quality but less on the protein and not as big of a hit to the wallet either

Not sure on the Acana, less price usually means less quality??  How much do your guys weigh?  That would also be a factor and my plan is really to feed Orijen in AM and raw for PM meal;  or maybe Orijen  6 fish with a little meat added to that 2 X's per day.  Don't know if that will work but will experiment a bit if I do change over to Orijen.  So am not much help at this point but I really do feel that variety is good, however if you find a particular dog cannot take change well then of course find something and leave them on whatever works for them.  It is somewhat individual.  But usually that particular dog has some sort of health issue(s).

Really would like to know more about the seniors on Orijen though.  Anybody??  Any breed info OK also...  Thx  Nan

I can only share my experience.  I had my 8.5 week puppy on Orijen puppy until he was 5.5 months.  I found him to have loose stools at first, but after 2 weeks it seemed like he got used to it.  I fed by the chart and recommendations to feed more to puppies.  I usually go off the ribs, I like my dog where you can just barely see the last rib.  Most of their food is for ALL life stages. My concern was Pano so I went with earthborn puppy and my 6 month old puppy loves it just as much as Orijen.

Around 13 months I will switch from earthborn puppy to earthborn primitive.  Compare earthborn primitive to any Orijen brand and I think you will notice it's just as good.

1. I didn't observe one difference in my pup when he was on Orijen compared to earthborn.  Coat looks the same, teeth, and his energy didn't change.

2.  Orijen is pricey, tractor supply carries earthborn almost 25-30 dollars cheaper. Oh and earthborn there was less poop and not as smelly!
