Hey guys, I decided to finally get my dream dog (German Shepherd) and he will be home in about another month. One thing that has me baffled is what type of coat he will have. Both the parents have the same short rough hair with fuzzy tails and the litter of which mine is a part of is 8 and out of the 8 only TWO (mine being one of the two) have more wild looking hair than the rest, when you put mine side by side compared to his siblings, theirs is all straight and flat and mine looks like he has bed head 24/7 it's interesting to say the least but I just am baffled as to if his coat will be like his mother and father which are the same or if he'll branch off to be a much longer length coat. I am wondering if you guys would have any idea if this is just a temporary thing or if mine will be the longer coat type compared to its brothers and sisters. Here are some pics to help you guys help me! :)

Mine is a boy (only two of eight were boys) I named him Klaus for anyone wondering the name.

Lots of mouths there to feed..Look in good health...for sure...

They look like regular coats not slick just what some say plush...full coats nothing long indicated.

In another week of so   put up a pic of them standing with front facial and body wise .

DO you have a pedigree to share..

Hey, my mistake, I should of specified, the one with the green collar in the single photos is mine. I am not the breeder or seller I just happen to have a close friendship with the breeder and I visit the dogs weekly, the pics of the litter and mother feeding were of when I was visiting last Friday. All these pics were taken last Friday to be exact. I am just wondering if you guys think the one with the green collar specifically (in the photos where he is alone) has any signs of him having a long hair coat in the future or of it is normal due to him having the fuzziest looking coat of the litter.

The breeder would have the pedigree and such, The mother and father are both purebred and they have all the papers and whatnot. I personally just wanted to give one of these dogs a good home whether they were purebred or not.

Agree with Yellow Rose. pup just looks nice a fluffy coat, not a long coat at this point. Repost in 2-4 weeks should show more by then.

Weezy.

Yes its genetically possible to get a long coated, or a medium (LANGSTOCKHAAR) coated pup, out of two

standard coated parents, IF they both carry the long coat gene combo.  Probability about 25% over all, though

that may be spread over a number of litters, does not mean a quarter of every litter will be longcoats.

As others have said, if you can show us an advance copy of the pedigree, some of us may be able to spot

if there are relatives we know to be longcoats or carriers/producers of longcoats.

Nice looking baby, btw, as are the rest of the litter.  I don't actually disagree with anyone so far, this looks

like a normal coat;  but its the wrong moment to tell especially from a  2-dimensional photo.

And yes, I'd say you definately have a GSD there, rather than any sort of mix.   Good luck with him.

I think the best time to see if a pup is longcoated is at 3 to 4 weeks, and you see it in its face, in Germany we say owl head becase the head seems rounder than the others, the body coat is no indication, I have had normal coated pups with longer body hair than their longcoated siblings as pups, when grown it was the other way around.
