www.schaeferhunde.de > then go to results All VA'S HAVE EQUAL RATING NO SIEGER ALL VA STATUS....
by hexe on 02 September 2013 - 02:09
Yes, that's correct. The SV decided that there would be no ranking of the VA's--they are all equal. The V placings on down, however, are still ranked highest to lowest.

Were the entries down this year?

If every one is equal, why bother showing them ? Oh, i know, you have to separate the wheat from the chaff, but if all the wheat is of equal quality, why bother to rank the chaff?

Really, I don't like the new system. I don't see it as bringing about change for the better.
How could it? We all are taught from childhood, strive for number one, if number one and number twenty is now equal.
.
Nope, I see NO uses here....

I'm wondering how long it will be until they go back to the old way? It looks like the number of dogs exhibited may be down from previous years. I think the changes weren't announced until the entries closed, so no loss in revenue this time. Next year might be a different story and a big loss in revenue might speak louder than the desire to "improve" the gene pool.
I have mixed feelings about no Va1 and frankly it's not really high on my list of things that make me lose sleep at night
. I'm good with it either way - like that matters to the SV.

Actually, I DO see a benefit to this system. Let's face it--at this level of conformation showing, what is the merit to declaring this dog to be 'more correct' than that dog [leaving the subject of whether the show line dogs are actually structurally correct and meet the breed standard aside]? There are no perfect dogs, so every one of the 14 VA's has at least one thing about them that could be better; and while it's generally accepted that it's harder to get a really good front than it is to get a really good rear, if your breeding candidate needs a mate that will compensate for his or her less-than-stellar rear and the VA1 dog is from a line that doesn't have or produce any better in that aspect, that VA1 dog isn't really the best dog being presented as far as your breeding program's needs. By eliminating the ranking, each VA is recognized for the positive qualities it has to offer breeders. As others mentioned previously, when the news of this decision broke, this revision should mitigate, to some degree, the mass flocking to a single dog for stud service just because it was named as the 'top' dog for the year, and encourage breeders to look more closely at ALL of the VA- and V-rated dogs for the total package each of the dog brings to the table.
Since I'm so not a fan of what I consider to be a 'roached' back that others refer to as an 'arched' back, and that type of structure has been the predominant type being represented in the VA rated dogs at this event in recent years, I generally found more dogs I liked among the lower V- and higher SG-rated dogs, but that's just my tastes.
Was disappointed that I didn't see any working line dogs in the entries, unless I overlooked them while reviewing the results?
