Ok I have had my pup for a little over 2 months and this thread is long overdue. Plus I just figured out how to post pics...lol...so now I can finally make this thread.
In May of this year I decided to get a GSD. I had 2 friends get me into GSD's and working them and it interested me. I had no idea GSD's came in so many colors. I thought they came in just black and tan. Boy was I in a whole new world when I found out they came in many colors, sizes , long/short hair and even had some not born in the U.S or Germany.
As a beginner I had nothing but the internet to educate me on dogs. Hell I didn't know what a working dog was!! The only dog I have had was a Collie, Akita and a Chow (which was my mother's dog).
After reading up on dogs I then called breeders to see what they had and what could they tell me about this breed. Some breeders were compete a-holes (like they were doing em a favor by selwhile others took the time to talk to me and educate me.on the breed. I joined some forums and got some recommendations. As with all recommendations you take them and callt he breeder but you make your decision based on your gut feeling and your research and not what someone else just says. You gather tons of information from multiple sources so you can form your own decision.
In the end I deided I wanted a dog to do PP and I wanted a dak sable color because they looked cool. I wanted an adult dog b/c I hate the puppy phase but then realized that I couldn't afford it so I had to go with a puppy. Boy was I in for a rude awakening when I had to learn more about the lines of different dogs and what each dog brought as well as making color be my last choice b/c there are more important things to look for in a pup rather than color.
Well after calling and emailing numerous (and i mean numerous) breeders, I decided to make a hour trip up the road and met Hans at Alpine K9. He was the very first and only breeder that I ever met. I was nervous. House in the middle of nowhere where if I died, no one could hear me scream. For a big guy, Hans was pretty cool and Debbie was great. I was scared sh*tless when I saw some of his dogs in the backyard of his home but was also intrigued.
Hans took me to his kennels to see some of the dogs he had and again I thought a dog was going to eat me. I am afraid of big dogs so this was traumatic enough. At the end of the day I saw a puppy that I did like but still wanted to check the market. Shook Hans hand after a great visit and went home to research more.
After a month later I went back to Hans and decided to get a pup from him but I wanted a male and at the time he only had a female for sale (who I still love to this day despite her being sold). Hans let me know that he had a litter in Europe that has some males but I had to act fast b/c it was a good litter. I told him ok let's do it. After research I decided that a Czech dog would be best and that i would figure it all out along the way with the puppy.
I have noticed that Hans gets a lot of stuff from people. Is Hans a a**?? Yes..lol Can he be a prick...yes. Is he really rough around the edges...yes. He can certainly turn some buyers away from the way he comes across no doubt. Hell almost turned me away to be honest but the guy knows his sh*t. I don't regret getting a puppy from him at all. I use to take the way he talks to people personal till I realized that he treats everyone the same so it didn't bother me anymore. Spend a lil time with the guy one on one in person...pretty nice guy and kinda funny. I appreciate him letting me drive to his house to watch him train dogs at 6am. I have done it a few times and it is awesome to see it. Dog after dog being worked is awesome for a newbie. Being out there for a few hours and watching and meeting the dogs and getting over my fear of big dogs was great. It also made me realize how serious

how serious these dogs are and the investment of time & money that I have to put in.
In September I ot Jax and couldn't be happier. To thank Hans and Jiri for sending me such a great dog I decided nwo to do PSA's with him and see how far we can go.
I would liek to thank Hans, Jiri but most of all all the other people on this board for their knowledge as well as the people I talked to in PM's for advice about dogs, breeders and how to raise a pup. I would name you but I'm not sure if you want me too but from the bottom of my heart, thank you. I use you advise everyday and I keep bugging you everyday so hank you for putting up with it and me. I read psots of people and the one's that make the most sense and have useful positive things to contribute to te board, I ask advice from. Rememeber how you present yourself here is how many new people will judge you and your views.
New people aren't idiots and can do research and get great pups if they take the time to research. Too much is spent blaming breeders when you have to do the research yourself. Take your time, be smart and most of all educate yourself and get multiple opinions and you can make a sound judgement on picking the pup you want from the breeder you want. I judge people on my interactions with them and just note theirs wih others.
ok...enough lip...here is Jax!!!

What a beautiful boy!!! And what a nice story to go with him. Kudoes to you for doing your research and reaching out to people for help. In the same token kudoes to those who did help you and not just to sell you a puppy. Enjoy your boy and best of luck with him.
