I use pieces of carpeting and blankets. I didn't know I was helping their hips, but I did know it is 100 times better than paper because they've got something to latch on to to move around. Also it is so much cleaner=--as you said throw a rug over the fence or you can throw blankets and towels in the washer. I use paper when she is whelping and when it is over, I clean the area out and put a material thing in there. Oh yeah glad you got the joke................BTW always thank you for the extra info.

I use cheap Walmart machine washable rugs with the sticky backs (think big bathroom rugs). I have 3 and I alternate them so I always have a clean one. They also absorb a bit of liquid and the sticky back helps keep my hardwood floors from getting too wet.

and use bleach with it........they wear out a bit quicker, but still work quite well.

I used to go to the local carpet store and have them cut 4, 5 pieces of indoor/outdoor carpet to the size of the whelping box. I liked the type without a backing, it reminded me of pressed felt, green like grass, about 1/4" thick. It didn't ball up in the whelping box, provided a good footing for the pups, and was really easy to clean with an antibacterial soap and a hose. Dried fast too. What you don't want to use is a continuous filament carpet that can be unraveled; it can and probably will cause a blockage if ingested.

I agree with Prager on the hip thing.
I want to scream when I see puppies on nothing, or cardboard or even woodchips.
I have said "numerous times" that I think the way pups are whelped and reared plays a big role in hip developement.
Just think what that constant rolling on the hip sockets, as a puppy is trying to get a footing to nurse, is doing to those new, "soft" bones.
I have often wondered when you see dogs with virtually no hip sockets, if those pups were forced to strive on a bare floor, or anything that. Does not secure their footing.
Very good 'food for thought'.
