Can anyone tell me how I would register a kennel name to become a breeder? I am looking at AKC and SV. I read the AKC info but the first criteria about having bred a certain number of litters etc, is already throwing me off. I have not bred a litter yet but don't want to have to wait potentially years before I have met enough criteria to protect my kennel name and have it recognized. What else can I do as someone just getting started?

what about registering through the SV, does anyone know the requirements? What did any of you readers who have registered kennel names (for me, German shepherds in the US) do when you first started breeding?

I think you will need to go through the AKC sooner if not later to establish a kennel name in the USA. I believe that the FCI and the AKC have an agreement to not trample on each others territory as well.  There are lots of possibilities for kennel names but many are already in use so you are not free to walk on an existing kennel name by going through the AKC process which protects you.  The lack of registration does not stop you from choosing a kennel name for the initial 5 litters and if you trample on an existing kennel name or web site with your preliminary kennel name you need to research it and correct the name early.  If you choose a kennel name and web address using the same name you should be able to find out quickly which names are already in use either by kennels or other web based companies.  Any kennel or company doing business in the pet or animal area will not be happy if you use their name and will likely let you know.  It looks like it should be simple but it is not always an easy task.
