We purchased a DDR female puppy last year and at the age of 8mos she had an outbreak of generalized demodex. She was bathed in Selsun Blue shampoo 2xs a week for 3 wks. She was taken to the vet and there was no signs of any live mites. We placed her in a pet home and she was spayed. She is now 15mos old and once again I was informed she has an outbreak of demodex.
Has anyone else experienced a dog getting demodex after being treated for it the first time and was scraped and no mites were found.

I have been in GSDs for over 30 yrs. I have never seen a re-occuring case of Demodex. This is the first one. Usually once its treated it does not come back. BUUUUUT, I just realized something. Its not the demodex that is the problem, as we should all know that all dogs have the mite or can get it. The mite is harmless IF the immune system is strong enough to fight it off. With this dog being 15mos old and she is still having issues, I would lay bets its the immune system thats the problem and not the mite itself. I hope what I am trying to say makes sense.

I agree with Hutchins, this sounds like an abnormal immune system. Poor dog.
