I am using my dog at stud to a female (Tested for Brucellosis).  She came to me on day 8 of her cycle.  Immediately stud mounted and tied with her.  Next day- no interest at all, no discharge, vulva no longer swollen.  Third day same thing.  It is my assumption that she is having  a split heat cycle.  What are the chances that she "took" from this first breeding?  In a split heat situation does the female ovulate in the first half?

If I was you I would do a progesterone test just to see where she is with her cycle.

In my experience a split heat is usually not fertile the "first half".  They come into a real, normal heat a month or two later, and usually thats when she's fertile.  Just my experience!

I have now had 2 females with split heats and they are fertil in their second half also.

One female would come in heat for a week, then suddenly nothing, not blood no more swelling etc for a full week, then bam, she starts bleeding again, swells good and flirts/ties with male about 3 days after she swells, will breed for 3-4 days. settled every time.

another female always had normal heats, this last one, she started in for about 3-4 days, stopped. no blood, no swelling. a month went by, she started bleeding again, swelling, bred normal had 7 pups.
hope this helps some.

You said "She came to you on day 8 of her heat cycle"... Are we sure about this?  Any chance the days were incorrect and you just caught her at the end?
