I think there is the possibility of veternarians using other existing treatments "off-label" to either slow down the onset of DM or repair some existing damage. I do believe that the problem will be solved in horses very soon. There is simply too much money at stake with horses. Once the therapy process and methodology is discovered for horses, all it wil take is for small animal vets to do the same process off-label for dogs. So my opinion is that the researchers that focus on dogs and small animals can feel free to play all the politics they want, in the end an equine vet is going to get credit for curing DM.
As for the Nivialin, I'm pretty sure people have posted personal experiences with the drug on this forum before.

This is a stimulant, so while it may make dogs appear better, it is just a stimulant. It is more for diseases that affect muscles.
