Tia sleeps on our bed when we first go to bed.  All i have to say is Mama Go Night Night, and she follows me in there and hops up on the bed for a short snuggle & tummy rub, then she heads out.  She hasn't slept in a crate for many months, she's 9 months now, and very well behaved and doesn't destroy anything, unless you leave shoes on the floor.  She lays on the couch too, and sometimes on the floor in front of our door, where it is very cool.

We don't have Ticks in Alaska, so that isn't a problem here.

Male GSD has his own half of the bedroom which he shares with my small breed bitch - got puppy pen panels from one side of room to the other with a gate in it.  Two other littlies sleep in/on bed and one oldie in a cosy bed alongside mine.  One young bitch in a crate as she asks to go to bed and jumps in it.  Sometimes the GSD takes himself off to bed before the rest of us and he goes on my bed but goes straight into his bit when I go up.   He could stay on the bed but chooses not to as he likes to spread out.  Can't imagine ever having a GSD not get off the bed if asked - I would just turn and walk away and they would be right behind me anyway - I can't even go to the loo without them!  As for parasites etc., living so close to them you would catch anything if they had it anyway, but if they are clean and groomed regularly you would know.  I am however convinced that I caught a recent bought of kennel cough from them!

I keep my bedroom door closed to keep the dogs off the bed during the day. I open it up about an hour before bedtime, as there is no insulation in the bedroom walls, and it's as cold as a refrigerator! With the door open, the warm air comes in from the fireplace and the rest of the house,, and it's usually up to a tolerable temperature by the time I'm ready to retire.

Even before I start getting undressed, Star will be in her crate on the left side of the bed, and Ranger will be lying on his bed on the right side. The cat usually arrives shortly after I turn out the light, and bumps around the room a bit before settling to sleep. I don't know what he does, as I can't see him with the lights out, but I think he teases the dogs for awhile to see if they will play with him. Roll eyes  Hey, he's only 6 months old, and like any youngster, doesn't want to settle for the night until he's pushed all the boundaries!   Teeth Smile

For certain allowing a dog to sleep with you may be something you'll regret one day Wink Smile

None of mine even go upstairs. My first dog didn't 35 years ago, and that is how it's stayed. When we are away none would dream of getting on the bed, but love to be close, and when I have had to sleep downstairs, there are always at least 2 by the sofa. I have 3 working line males at the moment, and have had up to 5 before. My young boy loves to sleep on my armchair when I go to bed, but would never do it in the daytime when I am around. Mine are all entire, and I have had them all from pups, and have never had any issues. My oldie does like guarding his dinner tho. Not from me, but from the other dogs. Just a grumble.

Looks like its de rigueur to share your bed with a gsd on PDB!. Thanks for your responses.

Gah horrors!  I can not imagine sleeping with a heater like a GSD.  This pre menopausal woman can barely sleep with her husband!  He seems to generate enough heat!  Nope GSD'S sleep on the floor or in their crates.  Whatever they choose.  On my bed . Not in a trillion years.  The dacshund is bad enough!!! She likes to sleep smashed between us. We spoon and she somehow squishes herself between us. Honestly I have no idea why she hasnt suffocated!

My dog sleeps on one side of me, and my cat sleeps on the other. Can I move? No. Can I breathe? Barely. Do I need a bigger bed? Yes. Frankly I have a hard time sleeping if they aren't up there. In the summer months they both start off up there but eventually Qira jumps down to sleep by the bedroom door or in her crate at the foot of my bed, and Cheyanne (the cat) will either sleep in her bed on top of the crate or on the computer chair. Qira always asks permission before she jumps up though, and will get down if I tell her too.

my dog is allowed on the sofa and the bed. when it's bedtime i say "it's sleepy time"
and my dog walks into the bedroom and sits beside the bed and waits for us to settle
in then he jumps on the bed. sometimes he goes to his bed and lyas down and waits for
us to settle in and then he jumps on the bed. rarely does he stay on our bed all night.

heck no....no one is allowed in a bedroom including a cat and he (cat) knows it, 1st off i love good bedding - 100% Egyptian cotton in white, grey and creams colors with down comforter, Cal king bed was not a cheap purchase so no, none is allowed on a bed, we tried letting them sleep in the bedroom but after unable to sleep with snoring, dreamy barking and farting (girls are silent but deadly) it was decided that dogs get sunroom with their own cedar chips beds, with view of our back door and just down the hall to front door...
