Six German Shepherds-two on the bed-two on mats on either side of the bed-two crated in another room.  Grew up in the country-not bother by parasites; raised on a farm-animals cared for before myself; I speak, dogs obey.  New chairs in living room-dogs not permitted-static mats insure complinance few times I'm absence.  Life is simple.

Do those mats work well?  I was just thinking that when I get a new sofa I want to train the dogs to stay OFF it but not have to crate them all day while I'm at work just for the sofa's sake.

My female is allowed on the bed much to my husband's chagrine, :-O, but not my male. He is definitely one that pushes the boundaries, and the one time he started to jump on there and I was laying on the bed, I pushed him off and he growled deeply at me. Mind you, I have had him since birth, and I use the NILF method with him. I know his temperament, and he is extremely opportunistic. There is delicate balance for dogs like this, but they DO exist, and they CAN be managed.

Eldee, that is great as long as you don't have a dog like Blitz. If you'd have tried to boot him onto the future,  you'd have needed a prothesis. With a few dogs it has absoutely nohting to do with anyone's dog training ability; some dogs are just hardwired wrong. I will tell you one thing, never again would I put in years trying to rehab such a dog.

^ Yeah, there's that element too.  Unfortunately given my circumstance and lifestyle I can't own a dog like that, so it kind of becomes a moot point when considering whether to allow the dogs I do have on the furniture or not.  My husband is not a real intuitive dog handler and doesn't have a strong personality when dealing with dogs, and I have friends and family who come and go at my house, my sister takes care of my dogs when I'm not around... aggression towards me or anyone in the house can't be tolerated.  Too much liability here.  I'm certain some dogs just have a screw loose but this doesn't really influence how I raise and train my other dogs or make me any more or less cautious about having animals on the furniture.  I think these dogs are just born this way.  Allowing them on the bed isn't going to turn a normal dog into a monster.

Benny sleeps on the bed  when my husdand is not there  but then jumps to his dog bed onn the floor.  In hot weather he stays on the bed ony a few minutes and then prefer the tle hall way.

I have never hd a probem allowing dogs on the bed as long as they get off when told.

i have let mine sleep at the foot of the bed.  They knew they was only allowed when I gave them the command.  Same with furniture, not allowed on unless i give the command.  Hell even got a goodnight kiss when they hopped on the bed before they settled at the foot of the bed.

some make more of a big deal than I think necessary but to each his own.

Here at one time or another eeryone has been in the bed.  As a general rule only one sleeps with us and that us our 7 pound Toy Fox Terrier.  While she really is not a dominate dog, male Malinois wh challenges everyone else refuseto do so.  He will lay on the floor to play with her and gives her baths.  Now if myself or my husband is in bed sick our very very old mix breed is in the bed to play nursemaid.  If it is my husband in bed the Lab we inherited from his brother sleeps with him.

The normal sleeping spots here are Sparkle the TFT in bed, the old girl in her bed beside me,  the Lab in her bed besde my husband and the Malinois on the couch so he can be sure no one can sneak in on us.  Everyone else in crates to prevent disagreements during the night.

My dogs are allowed on the bed... but that is the only furniture in the house they are allowed on.  Someone else said that they warm the bed up.... True!  lol!   I have 3 ... so its a race to see who can get there first.  No room for more than two!  They usually hop in and stay about 5-10 minutes and leave.... and if they don't get in the right spot and leave me enough room alot sooner!
