What do you mean?  Dominance issues *just* because the dog warms the bed?  LOL  That's not a bed/furniture issue.  My dogs are treated like dogs and they know who's the boss and whose house they live in.  I've never, ever had any of my dogs (male or female, working line or not) growl or give me any sort "dominance".  If someone has dominance issues because they let their dog on the bed the solution is much deeper than just not letting a dog on the bed.   All of my dogs earn every freedom and privilege they have in my house.  They all start in a crate or pen and work out from there.

I've already said my GSD sleeps on our bed. She doesn't normally stay there very long, gets too hot, it's FL.

I allow her on the bed for many reasons- she is not a dominant dog, she has been passed around for most of her life and has earned her priviledges. She's a good dog, very obedient, isn't destructive and her bladder would burst before she'd urinate in the house. She is a good watch dog, no one will ever get inside this house without her letting us know it's happening. So far in 2 years, she's done everything asked of her  AD, BH CD, RN, TCI, CGC and won some pretty nice awards offered by the GSDCA.  Not bad for a dog that in those 2 years never lived with the same person for longer than a few months. No ticks on the bed ever.

My 2nd GSD, a very dominant dog,  was not allowed on the bed. Dogs with that tendency should never be allowed on a bed or furniture IMO. I don't like dominant dogs, will never own another if I can help it. Dogs don't "get dominant" because they are allowed to be on the bed, they are born that way. Many owners get their first bite  from a dominant dog when they try to physically remove it from the bed or a piece of furniture.

Why would you want to own a dog if it's banned from being inside your house?

No, never.

Only my Rosé is allowed.  She can only come up when invited.  Once my husband comes to bed, she gets down, as there is not enough room.  Rosé is no where near dominant; she has a very omega temperament.  As with many of the other posters, it is more of a matter of warmth than anything.

Our dogs aren't allowed upstairs in the house where the bedrooms are - they are trained that it is an area of the house they aren't allowed in. They aren't allowed on any furniture either.

When we stay in the teeny tiny cabin on my in-laws' farm, the dogs are overjoyed when we all cram into the miniscule bedroom. Bosco comes over and gently licks my cheek during the night ....by the third night, being woken up repeatedly is no longer cute. :)

His/Her job is outside.

Years ago I had 2 mixed dogs sleeping with me, I swore it would never happen again and I stuck to that for many years I can fully understand why some don't allow it even if the dog doesn't have a dominant nature. It is a PIA at times. My current dog is not allowed on any of the furniture, just the bed.

I read something once in a book written about dog training by Monks somewhere, it was a while ago and memory not the same as it used to be. When they train the shepherds each monk is given a puppy for bonding and training. They believe that a shepherd should always sleep at the foot of your bed in your house with you. That is where mine sleeps every night. Curled up on her blankets at the foot of our bed. Every dog we have ever owned has slept there. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Radar is not able to get up on the bed, so he sleeps on his favorite blanket by my side of the bed.
His predecessor went through a "dominance thing," getting up on our bed to prove his point, when he was about 18 months old.  It took a while to convince him that WE were in charge of the house and everything in it . . he would get up on the bed and growl at us, as if to say "I dare ya . ." It made for some anxious moments before we made our point, then we got past it and never had a problem.  BUT he was not a trustworthy a dog as Radar . .if Radar was able I would definitely let him on the bed, but not on the furniture.  Actually I think that during the night he moves from place to place, protecting every corner of the bedroom . . I have noticed this on nights when I have had difficulty sleeping .. he is always "on patrol," always taking care of us . .
