I take my 4 years old girl to vet check weather she was pregnant or not, after X ray, OMG she got only one puppy, what I should pay attention to?

by Blitzen on 29 December 2012 - 13:12

I'd take her back for another xray about 3,4 days before she's due. Sometimes one puppy gets too big for the bitch to pass and she may not even go into labor and will need a c-section. That's the worst scenario, she may not have any problem at all whelping it. I've had both happen to my bitches when there was only one puppy - one had an 18 oz puppy on her own, another needed a section.

This is something I have had a question about for the longest time. Why is it so many breeders have such small litters? I mean I am always seeing litters posted of only 2,3 or 4 pups. Is that intentional?

by Blitzen on 29 December 2012 - 14:12

What do you mean by intentional? Sometimes it just happens or some puppies may have been stillborn or died shorlty after birth. One of my singleton litters was frozen semen and that's relatively common, the other was the result of 2 natural breedings.  One of my bitches had 20 puppies in 2 litters, another had 7 in 3.

By intentional I mean were there limited matings with the intent to reduce the overall size of the litter. I have had/seen dogs that mated once and dropped 6-8 or more pups. They were large mixed breed but I wouldnt think that would make much of a difference in litter size. Just curious, I am wondering if some of it might be like with women athletes, when they are in training they dont have a menses and have lower fertility.

I don't think so.

Murphy's law re. breedings: carefully planned litter with top stud, semen shipped across the country, expensive AI = 2 to 3 pups

Neighbour's mutt jumps the fence = 10 pups, guaranteed!   Cry Smile

lol sunsilver I guess thats about the way it is lol

by Blitzen on 29 December 2012 - 22:12

That's it in a nutshell, Sunsilver. So far 3 frozen implants for my girl, 5 puppies, one c-section. I'm waiting to make all that money dog breeders are supposed to make LOL

Havn't you heard Blitzen, some of these breeders do not make any money. They are doing it strictly for the betterment of the breed.
You know the ones, those that trade dogs like cards
