Hi All

I am wanting to put in a dog door that would suit my dogs, medium sized lab mix and 2 GSDs. It needs to be pretty energy efficient and durable, able to stand up to cold weather as we have very cold winters here. Does any one have any suggestions on what to look for or avoid?  Thanks in advance.

The one I have is an Ideal--I found it in a thrift store but I saw one the same size on Ebay not long ago for $77. I have had mine in for 8 years now--it's not been abused but it has definately been used hard. I looked at a lot of different ones and price wise & ease of installation-I will definately buy another one when this one gives out. One thing I might advise you of. Most of the doors for our size dogs are fairly similar sizes--the Ideal is different to the point I think you would have to almost replace it with an Ideal. At least that is how I figured it. I thought about getting a new one--since my door is steel, it would be a bigger deal to put a different brand in there. Hope that helps.

Here is a link to the place I got my doggy door.  http://www.gundoghousedoor.com  There is a very good website, with video clips, info, etc. The person is a raises and trains hunting labs, and the doors are used at the canine housing at Fort Bragg. I got the heavy duty door for my GSD. We allready had a pulley system, so I just got the guillotine closure with the channels. The package was surprisingly small enough to handle easily, and it came within two weeks.

Having gsds for over 20 years i can tell you the strongest longest lasting dog doors are the mason doors. Virtually indestructable.

I have gundog doors for my kennel and they are fantatsic with some life time warranties as well.....talk to some folks in Minnisota and they use them because of the cold and high winds. Cant go wrong with them.
