Doppelganger
Missed the link to the BC epilepsy register, as I had computer probs back in Nov. I think it is excellent. What I found so encouraging about it was the amount of entries that were made by the breeders of the affected dogs, not just owners.  It was remarkable to see the repetition of certain dogs in some cases, even given that the database is not huge.
With openness and a real will to do something about this problem great strides could be made.  I find many, or even most, other breeds to be light years ahead of the GSD in this regard, which is a terrible shame. Whilst it would be nice to think we can get the KC to take action, there is no better guaranteed action than breeders themselves taking the responsibility for securing a healthier future for the breed.
Sunsilver, good work, and it does make for horrrific reading.

hiya folks, just wondered wot your thoughts r on this statement taken from THE ALSATIAN BREED CAMPAIGNS FB page.....Poster Mr.Philip Kellingley.......I find it very strange that someone who has had a gsd which suffered from epilepsy still wants to wage a campaign that blames English dogs for it.Its a simple matter of fact -idiomatic epilepsy was brought into the uk from a german dog.It is also a fact that one(english type)breeder had a history of epilepsy appearing from much of his lines BUT the simple fact ,once again, was that this was as a result of line breeding.Line breeding was common across the board-in all breeds &many, many breeders-until comparativeley recently  n epilepsy doesnt usually exhibit itself until a dog is 4 to 5 yrs old.The people behind this campaign are well aware of health issues n they are addressed. We are also aware of a much bigger danger -conformation issues.Facts that may be news to you.The EU,s requirement (that generated the KC,s health check programme)named the GSD as a breed that they would stop the breeding of unless confirmation issues were addressed by member states. The UK under pressure from the KC has yet to ratify that document .The SV.has a programme that now requires a back x ray as well as hips ,elbows etc.Funnily enough they refuse to say why.None of this is addressed by current health checks-but our SV friends keep blathering on about health as if wot they do is enough. They have thought the KC over confirmation checks(but caved in when the KC took CCs away)Our position is clear -we believe that the backshould be straight .About the only animal in the wild with a back that is upwardly curved are rodents. We want dogs not rats.Date.Thursday 23/1/2013.......................The breeder he is talking about is me (NODDI)you will find my post re my experience with epilepsy n epi on this thread. The english type breeder this gentleman is on about is the kennel lines (except the 1/4 german part on one of the pedigree......benvillarosa one)The other pedigree is the english breeder in this script. Here in the UK ,a small minority of gsd exhibitors/breeders want to create a new breed .....ALSATIANS.These ppl.have a very small gene pool by their own admission on their website n propose 2 widen this by bringing in imported GSDS from the US n Canada,n when they reach our shores reclassify them as the new breed of ALSATIAN??????Dont know if thats possible with our KC ,anyone know?Wot bothers me is not the type of animal but the health aspects re.the inherited conditions in GSDS mainly epilepsy. The spokesperson seems to be convinced that because idiopathic epilepsy has no known cause then it isnt a problem in these lines that are backmassed with inbreeding n very close line breeding in a 5 generation pedigree (see the two pedigrees on this thread).I really am NOT putting this post on here because we have had words on the campaign facebook page,my concern is really for the animals themselves n any unfortunate owners.I will publically apologise to the alsatian ppl.if you think i am wrong. Will put links on a seperate post which can be deleted by admin if against ROS.thank you.Carole Spelman RHEINMEISTER GSDS (UK)

Do we have a testing lab like this in the U.S.?  If yes, does anyone have a link?
