My male I had picked for my female over a year ago is too tall. He is hitting flush with the other hole. I have tried a hill, stairs, holding, everything. Does anyone have any new idea's?  She is flagging and more than willing he just is not low enough. He is more than interested and keeps trying but it's just not cutting it.

If I were you, I'd try to round up several experienced dog people to help you. One should hold the bitch's collar, while the other guides the male's penis. It may even help to have a third person position the bitch's hindquarters.

I don't think a height difference will truly stop them from connecting if the bitch is really in standing heat. I've heard of too many mixed breed litters from dogs of such different sizes that you'd think mating would be a physical impossibility. I've even heard of litters conceived through a chain link fence!!  Where there's a will, they WILL find a way!

You might try giving it another day or so, and if they don't manage to connect by then, call for reinforcements!

We've tried with three but he seems not to be willing to go lower and she seems to not be willing to go higher. This is her first breeding although I've been breeding for about 13 years.  He usually hits every time but something is not working when these two are paired. This is her 7th day.. no bleeding, flagging, and rolling all over him for attention. Maybe reinforcements are best! Thanks for your suggestion!

Day 7 seems quite early, are you sure that's correct? In your situation I have tried sitting on a chair or bench and giving the bitch a "boost" by placing her midsection over my knees. Good luck.

My thoughts exactly, though I didn't want to say anything until someone with more experience chimed in, because I've never whelped a litter. However, my neutered male never showed any interest in mounting my femaie before day 11 or 12.

Yeah Day 7 that's what the vet had said.  I too thought it seemed a little early but she is swelled and flagging.  I'm thinking maybe AI but have heard of a lot of issues with it.  I'm going to give it a few more days and if nothing happens I will have to go down AI or finding another male. She is a serious bleeder and all bleeding has stopped. Male has been mounting over and over...

You may be too early for him to be really intensely into the process.  It's also harder when both the bitch and the mail are newbies.  I've found that finding an uneven place in the yard so that the boy is downhill from the gal helps. The suggestion of a couple of experienced people helping is a good one also.

(pssssst... they both got their OFA and stuff done?)

Yes, they both have OFA'd Hip and Elbows.  Both have scores of GOOD and NORMAL. The female is 3 and the male is 4.  It is not his first time breeding but it is hers.

"I'm thinking maybe AI but have heard of a lot of issues with it."

Issues?  If you get a competent person to do it (a veterinarian is preferable) and if it's done at the right time (preferably with a projesterone test) it can be very successful.

Do some digging and find a vet who has a proven success record.  Your local school of veterinary medicine probably has a department of reproductive veterinary medicine.

Too early, when it's just the right time, the boy should have no trouble tying,
you probably have at least 5 more days to go.....
