Rik - have I got this right ?  Maturing (ASL ?  Or others as well ?) dog
carries tail too high naturally, so in order to take it in the showring, the
(owner ?)  has some muscles sliced into ?  Which muscles ?  Is this a
DIY job, or does the veterinary profession collude ?  Have you actually
seen this done with your own eyes ?  You have me really curious now !

In addition to a surgical correction for a gay tail, I believe a dead tail may also be one of the first signs of spondylosis or DM. This is a link to Lanting's article on spondylosis.

Mindhutter, in the US it's a rather common procedure in many different breeds. Vets do it for the breeders I know. I think it depends on the breed which tendons are effected.

IMO whether or not a dog will gait off lead next to the handler is more a matter of training than temperament.

Been busy, Mindhutter. Training my "mutt" for her CDX, TD, and RA and she was bred a few weeks ago, so I'm trying to get her ready at the same time not working her too hard - no jumps right now. Glad you missed me Wink Smile.

hm, for many years one of the best vets doing this was in my area, I never watched the surgery. I did sit in on a consultation where he described it. This is not a really big secret here. The most I remember is that for this particular dog he would make 6 cuts close to the base of the tail. As far as which muscles (or tendons), i would not have known what he was talking about if told. Two members of the club I was in had it done.

Thanx Rik.  When 'dead tails' got mentioned to me over here, it was
always in terms of being 'broken';  but I never met anyone who admitted
to any kind of fiddling with tails of their own dogs.  What a curious world
we live in.

well, I never admitted it either.Teeth Smile but honestly, I never had a procedure like this done on one of my dogs, or a tooth or testicle implant or an elbow repaired (for show purposes). It never made sense to me to try and breed dogs and cover up something that is just going to have to be covered up again next generation.

Hundmutter, I think it is funny that Blitzen is having a dyslexic moment and you don't object to being called, "Mindhutter."

LMAO
