gsd should'nt have have a straight back, no roaching.......blah blah blah, showlines do, americans more than germans, germans showlines more than working lines....... blah blah blah.........Now this cow hock thing, to my knowledge some west german showline breeders would argue that, its a desired trait that helps them turn easier.......some others would say its a defect.........now im not talking to the point that u could light a ciggarette behind ur dog, but a minor cow hock, WHAT DO U SAY ABOUT IT?

Uh...what?
Also. American dogs in general are not roached at ALL

I have never heard anyone say it was a desired trait. I have heard some say it doesn't matter too much or affect the dog, but it isn't correct.
Don't you mean GSDs should have a straight back? I hope that's what you meant, otherwise you need to go back and read the breed standard again LOL.

Cowhocks are not normal, nor considered a desired trait. Many showline pups go through a "phase" while maturing and trying to get everything working "together" but usually outgrow/outdevelope it. Getting enough exercise will also usually improve it.

They are generally genetic--talking about more mature dogs now, not puppies as CMills is talking about--you can stack a dog to where you cannot see them but movement tells all. No they are not desireable.

I freaked out the first time I seen cow hocks on a growing puppy.. But then after I seen an Adult get a CH , and had considered that its just one part of the dog, not the whole dog. Every dog has a flaw, if cow hock is the only flaw, and its not crippling the dog, I myself can say it is acceptable. I wouldn't buy one myself, I would prefer for breeding to use dogs that are clean coming and going.

GSD SHOULD HAVE STRAIGHT BACK!!!!!, i had never heard of cow hock, never seen it, but apparently many have, and some say, its ok some say blah blah, just wanted to know what yall thought, luckly my baby doesnt have it, just came across it in some research i was doin and wanted some opinions on it

by Red Sable on 20 October 2012 - 20:10
I don't like them, and agree with those that say they are not desirable.

by supakamario on 20 October 2012 - 20:10
though not desireable, not necessarily bad?, how do shows look @ them?

by Red Sable on 20 October 2012 - 20:10
I would HOPE that a dog with cowhocks would be placed below that of one that is straight coming and going, but maybe the one straight in the back is easty westy in the front

OK, seriously, the show ring has lost me as to what they consider desirable conformation. It is anyones guess!
