My dwarf German Shepherd has been receiving treatment for his condition - thyroxine to bring up his thyroid levels and proligestone for his growth hormone.  This has increased the level of growth hormone and helped him a great deal.  For those of you out there with pedigree dwarfs, get your vet to check out the article in the Journal of Small Animal Practice.  Vol 43.  April 2002 "Use of proligestone in the management of three German Shepherd dogs with pituitary dwarfism".  It's not too expensive, although treatment is on-going and it does mount up - the insurance company refuse to pay as it is classed as a "pre-existing" condition.  I hope this helps some of you.

My dwarf 'Teddy' was treated with Soloxine. This helped him with his coat growth as he had lost his hair by one year old. Teddy lived a happy life with us until he was one month short of 14 years of age.

Pleased to hear that you have found a useful treatment for your little fellow. Please keep us updated on his progress. It is well worth being able to point the vet in the right direction in cases they don't come across very often. Thanks for the information.

Ann, that is a fantastic age for any GSD, for a dwarf - amazing.
Kind regards
Abby

I would treat them to a nice fat syringe of Phenobarbitol.

Jeff, were you meaning Pentobarbital?  Phenobarbital is for seizure's, etc.

That's not very nice.  Who care's if they are kept as loved pets?

Some Breeders take responsibility for what they breed. Anyone who knew my dwarf 'Teddy' absolutely loved him.I took him to training classes and also Breed Championship & Open Shows for people to see and learn about dwarfism. We would not choose to breed a dwarf, but it can happen to anyone. His parents were withdrawn from the breeding programme. Let us just hope that Jeff never breeds one.
