"Then again, working line folks are well known for just breeding dogs without consideration of the total GSD in mind nor its future so it isn’t that unusual I guess"

 Some people look at a dog and then ask for papers. Some people match pedigrees because they love to have "those" names there. My guess is, Leon was sold because I can't see any serious breeder in Slovakia using him. I would not, I rather use a dog with similar dloodlines that can show me much more. People who take pride in generations of good dogs that look good and work good would not use him much. They have a load more better dogs to breed to... with similar pedigree so tell me why would use something mediocre when you can go to something superior. ..HE was sold and I highly doubt anybody was lied to about his abilities. And seriously.. can't you read a dog or blaming it on everythng else, including a pretty experienced FEMALE handler is more appealing to justify his lovely pedigree without the heart for work!?

Upper right corner... look for your name and a tiny downward pointing triangle...click on that... and a menu appears, with your Inbox at the very top.

@ Gustav - I have a malinois female from my kennel that I kept for breeding,I thought her to be a nice prospect for breeding but now I don´t.I am pretty sure that when being pushed too much in obedience /e.g. doing forced retrieve/,she would bite.I have never pushed her too much but I am convinced about that. She is o.k. in everyday life,with people,dogs,she handles the pressure from the decoy well,she is extremely fast in bitework but my inner feelings are telling me not to use her for breeding.Here is her pedigree http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/dog.html?id=839879 . People often ask me why I decided so,I have a lot of people who wanted a puppy from her.

I have to disagree with this statement.Just the fact that most of the GSDs used by the police,army,for SAR,herding,etc. are from WL is a proof that a lot of WL breeders know what they´re doing.If you decided to come to my country in the future,I´ll show you a lot of WL breeders and their dogs,you´ll change your mind then.You´re more than welcome.
It is true that sometimes the dogs of low quality are sold to States from Slovakia but most often I see high quality dogs being sold overseas.Sometimes I feel sad when I see a highly perspective dog being sold too early / without leaving some good progeny here/.

@cage
Well, that statement was a broad general statement reflecting the philosophy that seems to prevail in the working line community as most that I am familiar with concentrate solely on the dog’s extreme temperament and nothing else.  Hence they are just breeding aggressive, high drive dogs in my opinion.  However, I am well aware this not the case for ALL working line kennels.

@gsdpack
In the case of Leon here is what I see in that video.  It is painfully obvious he has no rapport with the handler at all.  No bond with the handler has been established which is why he isn’t PROTECTING his handler.  Appears to me he was put in a kennel and brought out for schutzhund training and that’s it.  There is no love for his master going on there.  It is nothing more than an activity for him that he neither likes nor understands.  For him it is much easier to just retreat because his confidence and the bond with the handler wasn’t ever properly brought out of him.

Show line dogs are more like any other normal dogs (including Labrador Retrievers which are damn good dogs) and therefore you have to treat them as just normal dogs.  You have to get them to understand that the love of their life (the handler) is in serious jeopardy when someone comes at them in an aggressive manner.   This requires lots of attention and a place in the family to build the required bond for this to come out naturally.  This also requires lots of time investment which the working line types just don’t have the time or patience for usually.

Furthermore, at Leon’s level, they usually all have it bred deep inside them but you do have to coax it out I have found.  You just have to have a little faith in that is all.  But once you do, look the fok out!  They don’t do well being in a kennel and merely coming out just for training which is what most working line trainers do with the many dogs they usually have.   I mean, don’t get me wrong as this is understandable since their main focus is in aggression and/or sport.  Therefore they usually do have a kennel full of tightly wound dogs from which to train with all day.  Again, these are general, broad stroke statements so let’s not get the panties in a wad.  I am merely giving you a general overall view in how I see the difference in philosophies between the two camps.   And it is just my opinion, nothing more.  Take it or leave it.
