Maywood, the video was taken in November 2007 at BST in Slovakia.Leon was handled there by his trainer who titled him as well. She is not a hard-hand trainer so I don´t think this is the problem of him failing.Leon just didn´t handle the pressure from the helper. On the other hand,I know that he is a happy outgoing dog with good drives and no other issues. He just wouldn´t be a good patrol dog but he could make a nice SAR,therapy or narcotics dog. However,I would not mate a WL female mentioned in the beginning with him.I think there are a lot of strong working dogs with nice structure in the States. On the other hand, time will show what traits Leon passes on his progeny. As someone mentioned before sometimes average dogs produce great progeny while the top ones don´t.

Just one example of a dog that most of you probably know that was handled by extremely tough trainer but it didn´t have any influence on his protection work. Zoran Ben-Ju http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=448549 ,Zoran´s breeder Julius Benovic is known for being extremely tough when handling his dogs.I remember watching him and Zoran competing at Slovak Nationals. It was the first time I was going to watch them work alive so I was more than curious when they came to the stadium. It was awful to watch the obedience part - Zoran was "heeling" about a 1 meter behind Mr.Benovic,it was pretty obvious that he was scared of him.Retrieves were nice and send out was great /I think that was Zoran´s favourite part as he could run away from the handler/. Then came the protection work and suddenly we saw a totally different dog - extremely fast and tough.I think he got 98 points for protection that day.

So this is an older video of Leon when he was around 2 or 3 years old before he was sold to the US?  Even more interesting.   I guess what caused me confusion was it appears the video was just posted recently leaving the impression it was a recent video of him.  I can honestly say I have never seen a video of him like this before.  Now I’m beginning to wonder if the people who purchased him were aware of this and why the original owners even sold him as a breeding prospect if he had such temperament issues.  I mean, let’s face it, he doesn’t seem very breed worthy from this video for sure.  No denying that.

Can’t have it both ways Cage.  Seems to me either Marta & Dusan put way too much pressure on him in his training or they sold a not so breed worthy dog under false pretenses.  What’s the real story here?

This is why working line trainers handling show lines dogs are usually a red flag.  Especially when they are trying to get rid of them.  Just something I’ve noticed over the years I guess.

SupaK  The one time u should have started a new thread ...
For what its worth, I really like your girl's Sire's pedigree;  and I think it goes ok
with her motherline.  The Dam looks a really nice dog from her photo;  one
word of caution attached to her pedigree is that way back around the 1960s
there are some English and Australian bred dogs implicated in Epilepsy, so any
future breeding would be much safer if you avoided a stud dog with a similar
history (and something to bear in mind with your purchase of a dog pup - but
if you do get him from Von Arlett lines that probably  wont be an issue).  I am
another voice to add to your growing pro-Arlett kennel collection, by the way !!

Video on page.

Leon spent time at EurosportK9 and many of his protection issues were worked out.

Maywood,I am going to say it once more - Marta isn´t a tough handler. She put all the titles Leon has on him,she is also the person who handled him at BST.He failed Slovak BST twice, then she did SV BST with him,he passed. Then he was bought by Eurosport. They knew Leon failed the Slovak BST - 1.It is stated in his pedigree , 2.They were at the BST in Vyhne,Slovakia when he failed ,I remember seeing them Jozef Mravik there,he had Ozzy Barnero there,Ozzy was there for his life-time BST which he passed with flying colors,of course. BTW,they know Marta well.Everyone who is into GSDs in Slovakia knows her.  Eurosport had Leon for a while and they sold him then to States. They put all the information on him on their web including the part of the pedigree that clearly states that he failed so no one can accuse them of not being fair.
I wouldn´t say that Leon has temperament issues,he is environmentally safe,he is o.k. with people and animals BUT he will not handle being put under big pressure in protection work.Take it or leave it.It is not that unusual with SL dogs that they are not that tough. If the ones that passed SV BST would go to Slovak BST where Marek Kustar,Peter Micuch or recently deceased Dezider Mecner were the helpers I am pretty sure some of them would fail.
Just my 2 cents from I have seen so far - most of the SL that don´t pass are not spooky animals, they are most of the time happy outgoing dogs but they don´t take too much pressure from the helper.

cage.. i would not worry about that. Let people make their own decisions. I know exactly what you are talking about, many people will take your FIRST HAND experience as a good source of information and the rest, well they can be in denial.
