Major review of KC Registration system needed, says Alliance

THE CANINE Alliance – formed in the wake of the dog-showing community’s concern about the high-profile breed checks at Crufts – is adamant that it should be allowed to have a meeting with Kennel Club chairman Steve Dean.

Representatives from the Alliance travelled to Clarges Street recently to see KC secretary Caroline Kisko and executive of canine activities Kathryn Symns, when they asked for the checks to be suspended.

This was refused, and afterwards the Alliance said that although it was pleased its proposals had been taken seriously, it wished it had received more reassurance.

The Alliance said this week that quality dogs produced by dedicated breeders were being tainted by those from commercial breeders, and it wants the KC to cease registering puppies of parents who have not been health tested.

The checks – carried out by two vets – prevented the Pekingese, Bulldog, Clumber Spaniel, Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff and Basset Hound from representing their breeds in the group in the main ring at Crufts, and caused huge controversy which still rages.

The Alliance’s steering committee was due to have a meeting on Wednesday of this week – the day after the KC’s General Committee meeting, at which the subject of high-profile veterinary checks was to be discussed. The Alliance’s ‘extensive’ agenda included discussion about its constitution, rules and structure, the appointment of more officers, plans for regional meetings and promotion of the Alliance itself.

The item on the agenda said to be the most important was to suggest ways in which the checks can be carried out ‘in a manner that is fair, unbiased, acceptable to exhibitors and which in no way undermines a judge’s decision’.

"The Alliance is adamant that it should be given a meeting with the KC’s chairman, Steve Dean, at the earliest possible opportunity,” a spokesman said. "What has been made abundantly clear by Alliance members is that they feel the profile of quality pedigree dogs produced by dedicated breeders who exhibit the results with pride has been tainted by combining their dogs with those that have been bred by commercial breeders in the interests of statistics and publicity.

"While the Alliance acknowledges that putting an end to puppy farming is a massive challenge, it feels that it must, on behalf of its members, impress on the KC the need for a major review of its registration system so that granting KC registration to litters bred from parents which have had no health testing whatsoever would be impossible.

"It accepts that such a move could result in a considerable loss of revenue to the KC, but feels strongly that the governing body must do everything in its power to protect the reputation of the breeders who support it.

"Many of these breeders feel that they, and their dogs, are being penalised by the actions of those who see pedigree dogs as nothing more than a commercial venture.

"The Alliance feels that until such time as the KC makes positive moves in this direction the image of pedigree dogs at large will continue to be tarnished.”
