Good evening,
I have a five year old female who was in heat in October and is due to come back in heat in February, yes she has become a fourth month cycler. However she is constantly licking her private areas. Not just non-stop but everytime she sits down she give it a few licks. Ihave been having problems for years getting her bred and I even tried twice this year with no success. Could her licking be an indication of a problem going on in there? She doesn't have any type of discharge or odor.

Sometimes a case of mild vaginitis is difficult to detect unless your vet does a smear test for evidence of puss.

I should think that whatever it is she is trying to dislodge, is either gone for good, or there to stay.

there is some type of problem if your female cycles too soon and is not getting pregant, get her hormones level checked, could be her  thyroid .  the licking is also not normal, i would get her checked over.

There are TONS of things this could be... but here are a few...

Vaginal licking could also be a sign of cystitis/urinary infection

Just because you dont see discharge.. .doesnt mean there isnt any.. especially since she is licking so much.  I would also be concerned about a pyometra (infection of the uterus) if she is cycling so frequently and not be able to be bred.

Have you had her/the stud dogs tested for Brucellosis before breeding?  That is a sexually transmitted disease and can make dogs sterile as well.

Honestly,
I would go see a good vet and stop guessing.
Oh, and sorry about the line from The Long Kiss Goodnight, I couldn't help myself.
Moons.

Thanks everyone! I will definitely go get her checked because her not conceiving me is really worrying me.

How can brucellosis be passed? I know its sexually transmitted but I was reading that the bacteria is ingested? Can one infected female infect another female maybe by sharing the drinking bowl or eating from the same food bowl?

Brucellosis can be passed sexually and  through urine, so all a dog has to do is step in the urine and then lick her paw, to get it. i would be checking for more than Brucellosis, there are many things she may have, but cause the hormones play a big part with when a dog cycles i would start there,

Mycoplasma is another one i think of. go to  your vet and do some test....

So would I have to do multiple tests? Or is a vaginal smear/cytology enough to check for all the possible bacterial infections she could have?
