It is true that not all readers will read microchips.  Some companies design their microchips to read only their microchips.  Some companies are now banding together so that it will be more universal.

Ok, so we're going to go ahead with tattoos for both of our males.  However, does anyone know if there is a ryhme or reason as to what ID number they get?  Is that something that we pick or is that something that the tattooer (i.e., licensed vet, USA official tattooer, etc.) does for us?

I did both for my dog.  As for the tattoo, I picked one that means something to me...
a flying unicorn...

NOT. 

Couldn't resist...sorry. 

Actually I used her call name and the year she was born with the initial of my last name being the first digit.  MECHO8...unfortunately when they put it on her pedigree they read it as MECH08 which ticked me off at the time but it will have to do.
