I believe this is the reason I lost my pups, was just talking to a vet repo and
she got me thinking why.....
she got me thinking why.....
Uterine Inertia is the failure of contractions during whelping. Normally the bitch strains and muscles contract pushing puppies into the birth canal and then expelling them.
Uterine Inertia can fall into two categories. "Primary Inertia" occurs in heavily pregnant bitches near their whelping date. The bitch fails to have contractions, but the cervix dilates and the placentas can detach from the uterine wall.

I just read your other post to find out what you were talking about in this thread. I am sorry for the loss of so many pups. Look up K9 herpes virus as well. That could also have been brought in by another dog. I will never expose my bitch to other dogs, prior to breeding, during pregnancy, or after. Learned the hard way from her first litter, the second litter, no problems. Although that is not always possible with mutiple dog households, but keep her seperate.

Thank you dmsharkey for taking the time to reply,
I first thought canine herpes cause 80% of adult dogs carry it, but it does not
show unless a bitch is stressed, my bitch also had kennel cough that I brought home
from training class, or maybe a show, she had it 2 weeks from delivery, and only for about 5 days, then she was healthy as a horse.
I usually don't go to any training or shows when it's close to whelp time, but I let my guard down....
I believe I lost about 10 pups, I stopped counting.....
The two I have look very healthy and have opened their eyes, and are full of life,
I am so grateful that they will be able to grow and play together.

I had a Min Pin bitch many years ago who was absolutely huge. She went into labor but really did not progress at all so I called my vet as I am not one to wait. Now Sassy weighed a whopping 6.5 pounds not pregnant. We delivered 7 puppies by c-section - an enormous litter for a Min Pin. Total weight for the puppies was over 3 pounds - not including placenta, flud and so forth. According to my vet her uterus was so full it could not contract, a fast c-section saved her and the puppies.
I think sometimes these huge litters can cause more problems than a singleton.
