From a breeder's website I get:

Explanation of ratings and titles in dogs
descriptions and pedigrees

Hips/Elbows certification:
HD/ED - hips/elbows:
a1 is equal to OFA excellent
a2 is equal to OFA good
a3 is equal to OFA fair
a4 is equal to OFA mild dysplastic
a5 is equal to OFA severe dysplastic
a6 means hips/elbows were certified by country other than Germany , but met the standard requirements and are not lower than a3

From OFA website:

Other Hip Dysplasia Registries—An Approximation

I don't see reference to a1, a2, a3 etc, what am I missing?

Fred Lanting's book
Canine Hip Dysplacia and other Orthopedic Disorders

This is an abreviated table showing only FCI, German, and American rating systems.

The full table is on page 215 and compares 11 different systems......

This book is chock full of information and I suggest that every breeder have a copy.

Its written in an easy to understand format and can help everyone!

What does this breeder mean by a1, a2, a3 etc?

Also, according to OFA, OFA fair is not SV fast-normal. OFA fair is SV normal.  OFA borderline is SV fast-normal.

Before grading among normal, one cannot tell if a dog is excellent, good or fair.

Then one could easily unknowingly breed two fair hips.

a1 = a normal
a2 = fast normal
a3 = nz
---

As has been said before, most GSD people do not think that OFA's equivalency table is accurate. Dogs have been known to go OFA Excellent who were a3.

Most people who are active in breeding/importing/training European GSDs seem to think the ratings are more like this:

a1 = OFA Excellent - Good
a2 = OFA Good - Fair
a3 = OFA Fair - Borderline/Mild

a4 or a5 -- you don't actually see--these dogs don't get "a" stamps. But they would equal moderate and severe HD.
a6 = rated by another country, but passing/clear hips

"Most people who are active in breeding/importing/training European GSDs seem to think the ratings are more like this:

a1 = OFA Excellent - Good
a2 = OFA Good - Fair
a3 = OFA Fair - Borderline/Mild"

I believe there are also opinions in the other direction.

First, SV is at 12 months and OFA is at 24 months.

OFA excellent is a very difficult grade to achieve.

I think there is a lot of bias in stating that  OFA Good is not better than SV fast-normal; I think OFA good is surely better than SV fast normal.

I tend to think that perhaps some OFA fairs are not better than SV-fast normal, but some fairs are as good as SV a1.

One has to guess what motivates OFA to state that fair is about the same as lowest grade of SV a1, which is normal.

OFA also does not discourage breeding fairs, as it clearly states that "fair is still normal". In fact, it states that breeders should not rule out fairs; for me, I would avoid breeding two fairs.

I think no where on earth can one check the percentage of offpring with HD, since offspring with HD are mostly not reported. Realistically, even in Europe, one can look back on the ancestors hips. ZW rating cannot count on percent offspring with HD. Offspring with HD simply are not bred and not sought out or known, no matter where.

Also, the breeder is completely off here in seems, BSing in his or her site.

Now I get it. The breeder is using SV a1, a2, a3, entirely wrongly.

May be this is the most realistic:

SV a1 is normal, includes OFA excellent and Good and high-end of fair.

SV a2 is fast normal includes perhaps the more marginal of OFA fair and OFA Borderline

SV a3 is  OFA borderline or mild, not suitable for breeding per OFA.

With previous radiographs which I have sent to both OFA & SV, I would agree with something similar to
the last statement or Fred's theory.

I just had a dog who went OFA Borderline as a pup, then Mild as an adult, just got an NZ.

In SV ratings you cannot get better than a1normal that is the highest grade they can give your dogs and thankfully both mine are. How a1normal compares to the OFA gradings i do not know
