First...what a relief to find something...ANYTHING...on Reflex Dyssynergia here!!
I've read every post regarding it, and now feel some relief, since I know I'm doing the best I can for my guy. Like everybody else, diagnosis was a long haul, since it's rare (thank gawd, I had a Vet who was willing to do research, since she had never seen it first hand before).
We have mangaged it now for 3 years....MoJo takes three Prazosin's a day, plus...IF he goes into a pee spell, where he cannot urinate, he gets 10 mg's of Vaium (Diazopam)...We've had spells where a spell might only last 3 hours....but we've also had them last as long as 23 hours. So far, we have managed to NEVER have a single bladder infection...and this I think is due to the fact that I make sure he urinates every 2 to 4 hours, except at night when he might go 7 hours. Because he seems to only get a spell, if he does something athletic (chase a barn cat, run an errant magpie out of the yard, play with other dogs, etc)...I have to watch carefully to make sure he's relatively subdued. The only "real" game I've found that he can play is chase a hocky puck...it rolls straight, so there is no twisting, turning, GSD whipping in circles kind of excitement. I know he'd prefer a much more exciting life, however they DO get used to "less than" exciting....Age has helped. He developed this at 4... now he's 7, and more content.
It is a very stressful disease to live with....never knowing when, or for how long a spell might last. When he does have a spell, I go out with him every 30 minutes...let whatever might spurt out, get out....at least he's emptying his bladder little by little until the Valium can kick in and relax the sphincter.
I felt that putting this down in here, where there is actual talk about Reflex Dyssynergia might help someone in the future....
