How did you do this weekend? Interested in knowing...............

by Smiley on 03 October 2011 - 19:10
Hi, there!! Thanks so much for asking! Thatw a skind of you to remember! Well, it was just a UKC puppy match as she is only 5 months (actually turns 5 months tomorrow) and she has to be 6 months to show. But, she got her first ribbon (despite my pathetic attempt at showing her- yes, I really have been going to breed handling class so I don't know what happened)!!
Woohoo!! She took a 3rd place with either 5 or 6 in the class. The winner was a little bull terrier and 2nd was a little rat terrier. I have to say that those little terrier puppies are pretty cute! My girl pulled a third despite me forgetting to pull her show collar up for gaiting (judge actually stepped in and did it for) and me panicking at exam and completing dropping her leash trying to stack her.
She was the only GSD. But, I got a lot of compliments on her and her temperament which was cool! Also, a member of a GSD club stood and watched her and approached me after class to tell me she was a nice little girl and to keep at it.
Now, if anyone knows how to teach a dog to gait in front of you please tell me as my breed handling instructor told me she has no clue!!!
But, she traveled to the show great. Was very relaxed..even pooped at show which I was told was a good sign?? I was so proud of her!!!!!
Her first official UKC show is in November!! So, wish us luck because I need it (she is fine but I am the disaster)!!
So, today we celebrated with a nice hike in the state forest!!

She's absolutely beautiful!!!
So alert!!!
I hope to bump into you at a show sometime, I have never been to a UKC show,
but I am starting to reg. my dogs with them, they seem to be more of a working dog club!
She may surprise you in her size, from the looks of her, I see big paws, and those ears, she will
need to grow into them......DDR shepherds mature very slowly.........
Thanks for the update!

Gorgeous girl!! congrats on the win! I would be interested on how to get them to gait infront of you too. I've always had the wl guys NEVER did a show. Will be starting with Nala and I've always taught her fusz when on the leash, seems like I might have ruined her now I'm gonna tell her to gait in front of me (she has a beautiful natural gait, sometimes I just like to watch her move) and she is going to be pretty sure it's a set up! LOL

Thank you guys for the nice comments!! She is my "hippie child" who would rather be chasing butterfiles (literally- and I am not kidding) and giving kisses!! hahaha Just today, she sat down and watched the geese fly over us like it was the most interesting thing in the world. So, um...I guess we need to work on focus!!
To make matters worse, she was wagging her tail so hard at the judges approach that it was embrassing! I had to whisper to her..."Listen, you are WL darn it..now be aloof"!!
Mirasmom- or, she could just end up with big old bat ears in a small package! hehehe Oh, BTW- I am joining your club as I ran into Shannon at the show!! So, I'll be running into you a lot and maybe my girl can get a glimpse of Rollie for future consideration!! *wink*
Donnerstorm- What is fusz? Good luck with Nala!! If you find out about the gaiting than let me know!! What part of the country are you in? If you are in New England we can meet and try to figure it out!!

Fusz spelled Fuss means Heel in German. First of all glad you did well. I told you you would and the judge would help you. If you are going to show in German conformation she does need to run out in front of you but if you are only going to do UKC then there's no need. In fact when I was doing classes years ago for conformation I didn't want my girl pulling out. You might do better putting it on the training forum.(your question) Were the other exhibitors doing it? In other words why do you want your puppy to do it? I'm very curious is why I'm asking. On the way to Topeka I bragged about your pup and about you. I knew once you got your feet wet you would be OK.
Mirasmom, I know someone who breeds only 100% DDR dogs and that's all she shows is UKC--some of her dogs have their Grand CH. That's why I started going cause of my boy. I think your dogs would do very well.
Smiley I don't know when your show is next month but we have one coming up Nov 5th and 6th. I am hoping to finish my girl. By the way thanks for sharing the pics--I am in love with your girl........................
Again congrats--you go girl!!!!!!!

Von, thanks again for your support!!! That is SO nice of you to take teh time to support a newbie!!
In terms of gaiting, it seems about 50% will gait in front and, of course, they do look better doing it but that could just be my warped perception!!
Good luck at your show next month!! I hope you can finish her!! My show is the end of the month....
So, you went to Nationals, huh! Lucky you!! Hey, any thoughts on Promise Keeper who went Select? I like that he had a tracking title and Therapy Dog title and was Temperament Tested. Plus, he didn't look that extreme at all so I was shocked that they plugged him in the last Select spot...Feel free to PM about him if you have time. Thanks!

Smiley,
Where are you located? I show my American Bulldog in UKC and have gone to a couple of shows in MA, hosted by the Apple Valley Rat Terrier Club and APBT Club of New England. He finished his CH after those two show weekends this spring/summer at 16 months. I'm waiting until he fills out more before he has any chance of showing for the GrCH. Like you, we're usually the only dog of our breed at the shows and the competition in the Guardian group is tough! I suspect those Dobe's fall out of the womb free-stacking.
ETA: Just looked it up, I showed in Westfield, too! Those rings are SMALL, gaiting a GSD effectively would be very difficult.
