Shtal

by Shtal on 03 October 2011 - 02:10

I'm planning to breed my female with this male instead my oversize male. (I'm making some changes in my mind for future plans)

What do you guys think? Does his body frame looks correct! (I'm sorry I caused trouble - but I decide slowly to make some changes)

Looks should be of last importance. How does he work?

I haven't really spoke to the owner about how he works since it's too early, my plans was for the next year.

I haven't made my solid decision on him yet, I'm still looking for good stud male near my area.

Is he sound/healthy/able to work (not that he will necessarily be a working dog but can he withstand it if he has to)?  What is his lineage and will it make a difference in the breeding?  What is his temperment?  How about OFAs or equivalent, DM testing, etc.  Will all he is bringing to the breeding compliment your female?  Looks are important but I believe it is down on the list.  Ask yourself exactly why this male vs another male, what is it about his male that interests you and makes you believe he will be improving the breed overall?  Then do you have the data to back up what you feel is important?  That is what helps me decide on one dog over another.  Good luck

Thank you, this time I will try to improve!

Here is another picture of him!

He has a very steep croup, and his back looks too short to me. A GSD is supposed to be longer than it is tall.

Here is a link to the translation of the breed standard: http://www.fredlanting.org/2008/06/sv-standard-translated-by-fred-lanting/  I would read it in detail and ask myself how closely this dog is to the standard.

I think he is a pretty boy and insted of asking all of the questions about him, maybe the most important one is what does he produce?

by Nans gsd on 03 October 2011 - 15:10

Yes, have your seen any of his puppies??  All health clearances need to be in place with written documentation before a dog is used at stud in my opinion that is probably as important or even more so as his temperament and good looks.  If he has the best temperament and good looks but carries the DM gene then I would not even consider him for my bitch(s).    Same clearances required before you breed any bitch.  Best of luck  Nan

Yes, he does produce, the owner said he was bread 4 times and was successful. She said he has a good temperament.

Just to be correct about DM?

Shtal, tht's NOT what we meant! Any male dog that still has its testicles can produce puppies. The question is; WHAT does he produce? What do his puppies look like? Have they been titled? How is their temperament?

Those are the questions you need to ask.

BTW, it's BRED, not bread. Bread is what you eat.

And yes, DM stands for Degenerative Myelopathy.
