I have a collection of over 40 books on the GSD and/or training. I wholeheartedly recommend starting your library swith the following four which contain all the basics:
THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG IN WORD AND PICTURE by Max v. Stephanitz, He was one of the starters of the breed
TRAINING DOGS, A Manual by Colonel Konrad Most
MAN MEETS DOG, Konrad Lorenz
THE DOG'S MIND, Bruce Fogle
Good Reading!

but what makes the other too so good?????

vom Stephanitz is obviously #1
Most is to training what Stephanitz is to breeding. It is a primer written in the 1920's and probably is the earliest reference to the concepts of avoidance and complusion in training. Subsequent writings echo Most's theories. Hard to find, if not impossible. My copy was found in a London bookstore. Your library may find a copy on inter-library loan.
The Mind of a Dog by Bruce Fogle, a Canadian vet. Fogle writes on how a dog processes information. Still available.
Man Meets Dog by Konrad Lorenz, an Austrian psychologist. Analysis of the relationship between man and dog from earliest contact. Also provides explanation of canine behaviors.
Good reading!
