Titan vom Mittelwest is my males sire. His dam is Layla vom Mittelwest. From time to time I will check the breeders website to check in on how things are going. Also, when I purchased my male his dam was untitled, so I like to inquire about that too......
Anyway, today I was super surprised to see this....
http://www.mittelwest.com/German-Shepherd-Dogs-For-Sale.htm
Because I am just plain nosey and own a progeny of Titans ...lol I want to ask some opinions/questions of other folks especially breeders....
What would be some reasons that a breeder would be willing to part with a dog like Titan, who is in the prime of his life/breeding?.. Is this typical for breeders to sell their "top" breeding dogs. What would be your best guess at what a dog like Titan would be sold for? ( I think it might be nice to keep the family togteher so I need a dollar amount to present to my husband)...lol...lol
And no, I am not going to call the breeder and ask, just in case some "wise guy/gal" wanted to suggest it...lol...;)

Taken from the website....
offer Titan for sale to a qualified home and discerning buyer.
discerning buyer = Someone with A LOT of money to spend. LOL!

Deanna, just my opinion. From what I've seen of your dog I would rather have him at this stage you already know what his possibilities are, but you haven't come close to the potential of yours.
The owners that have him now have already campaigned him to his potential. Where else can he go, but only for a pet. He would be a high priced one at that.
Once you see the past don't you want to see whats up ahead, it could be more exciting.

The most common reason for getting rid of a breeding animal is that all the females on the place (whether it be a farm or kennel) are related to him, and the gene pool needs new blood
Another reason in this case, could be they simply need the money. Showing dogs is an EXPENSIVE hobby!
And yes, they probably need the money for campaigning the up-and-coming schutzhund dogs!

Thanks for the comments so far....: )
desert dog, yours was a thoughtful post..thanks
( most typically) Would a dog like Titan be sold "as a pet"...without breeding rights...I am not interested in breeding any dog, I am just curious and the ad did not specify it....

Sunsilver - I agree - probably money. But if the dog was such a good sire - they would earn more money from stud fees in a next few years than from selling the dog... Great AKC sire I know can bring close to $100K or more a year in stud fees...
OK - me personally - the only reason that I would be getting rid of a dog like that (supposedly almost perfect) is only if he would be more trouble than it's worth and his usefulness run out... Advertising isn't very clear, but my first impression was that they target rather a rich pet home than somebody interested in breeding him. If you need to sell a great sire in an AKC ring - you usually don't have to advertise it - there are show people that will take him of your hands pretty quick...
By the way - he is a gorgeous looking male, so he probably won't be waiting for a new owner too long (never mind the price tag)...
