My husband bought a sweet little GSD from a BYB ( I know how terrible they are, but he couldnt resist the puppy) and was told that the pup was born Jun 28th..which makes him about 8 weeks. After his first vet visit, and the confirmation of roundworm, he weighed in at a little under 5 lbs. He's very tiny and looks a lot younger than any 8 week old GSD ive ever seen. All the vet said was that he was small for 8 weeks. Comparing him to pictures ive seen of other puppies, he looks more like a 5 week old puppy in size and physical characteristics. While in Petco today at least 3 people commented on how young he looked. Is there and chance that the breeder tried to pass off a much younger puppy to my all to trusting husband? Or would my vet have mentioned that he is most definitely not 8 weeks? If I can figure out how to post a picture, would you all mind giving me your opinions? I have an appointment with the vet next month for his next round of shots but all my googling is making me nervous with links to Pituitary Dwarfism.

For size reference, in the second picture that is a 10lbs chihuahua he's snuggling next to.

Awww he is adorable thats for sure:)
But yes i would have to say he is very tiny for 8 weeks.
I would say he is likely to be younger than what the breeder said. Were there anyother pups there when your husband got him? Were they all the same size.
Could possibly be the runt of the litter and may catch up over time. I have seen that happen as well. But he is really small..
But darn he is so cute:)

There was only one other male left and he was just slightly larger. The woman told him that he wasnt the largest pup, but he also wasnt the smallest.
Im hoping he's just younger and not developmentally/physically stunted in growth. Poor little guy.
Wouldnt the vet have noticed if we were telling her he was 8 weeks, but in actuality he was much younger?

I agree he looks tiny, if he's younger than 8 weeks then it is important that he can eat what is offerred to him safely, just a thought.

Thanks Ibrhaim, I go through all the trouble of clicking on the links and then scroll down and see you had saved me the trouble!
Dorothy he is absolutely ADORABLE!! I love that last pic. He looks healthy, so if he is a little younger it's no big deal, and if he is a little smaller at this age no big deal doesn't really have a bearing on his eventual size. Doesn't look like dwarfism to me, I could be wrong but I thought normally with that diagnosis there are other physical symptoms, like dome shaped heads etc.

If there was another pup there around the same size i would say she lied about there age.
You would think the vet would have but who knows..lol
I would just bet its an age thing and he will continue to grow and thrive. Feed him some good food and see how he does.
He is going to be a gorgeous guy!!
