Which dog in the USA is much like Larus von Batu, or produced similar in type?

There were 3 prominent males from Larus brought into the US. I'm sure there were more but there were 3 that made a statement at the National Events. Voltan, Ronaldo, Spago. Each placed first or second at National events. Of the three I would have to say Voltan is the closest in type to Larus. I'll post pictures, you can be the judge.

Ursus produced many 'types' of high quality animals some were his type, others were not, yet they were very successful. It was interesting to see how he could produce such quality in a variety of type. This production was somewhat abstract from what is generally desired in a male. Males are typically a good producer if they consistently produce similar type. Ursus was an exception. He and his offspring of different type were accepted.
Things changed as Larus was emerging. The interpretation moved back towards consistent type. The dogs from Larus that were not his type did not place as well. As I've travelled the country, I haven't seen any from Larus that resemble him. Maybe someone else has.

I have to go with Voltan also, although all are very great dogs.

Do you know the mother lines of these males. The clue to type may lie in the combination of the breeding families. Also were these three males bred in Germany or from German females.

Voltan does look the most like Larus, minus his head.... at least in that pic.
Larus has always been one of my favorites, as far as showlines go.

Voltan and Ronaldo were both born in Germany. Spago was bred in South America, Argentina as I recall. He was imported by Ricardo Carbajal for Jose Jasso.
Spago placed SG1 12-18 at the USA sieger show in Nashville, TN which was the last place I recall seeing him. The judge was Erich Orschler, Larus' breeder. He ran Spago about 4 laps longer than needed just to dispell any accusations that he may not have been the winner that day. Spago was like the energizer bunny, he kept going and going.
Ronaldo was at the same show and placed SG1 in the 18-24 class making his second sieger title that year. He placed SG1 in the 12-18 class at the NASS in Madison, WI a few months earlier.
Also entered in the show was Larus Batu's sister Laola who was out of coat and inadequately double handled in the ring. Her performance test was outstanding. She was called out in 3rd place and finished VA5. If her brother was anything like she was, he was a super animal.
Surprise entry was none other than Yasko Farbenspiel, Larus' father recently imported and shown in the veteran class through a generous act by Bill who had recently imported him. No doubt the world champion would have won the working male class, Bill was gentleman enough to spotlight Yasko in the veteran class allowing the younger dogs to compete for the few VA positions. A very sportsman like gesture.
Voltan went VA twice. He's linebreed on Ursus' father Hobby from the same kennel as Hobby. He had a very successful career in the working class placing VA twice.

Dog1 thanks for the info. Can you tell me please the full names of the dogs so that I can look up the female sides of the families. Also, I have noted in Germany that Erich Orschler has never been shy about promoting his sown kennel and bloodlines.

The sentiment amoung GSD enthusiasts around that time was the same. It looked like Larus was set to be sieger, his breeder was the judge, it was all very convienient and rumors were flying, the critics were chating up a storm.
It's not too difficult to determine if rumors are true and if dogs are placed correctly. Political placings do not generally follow a pattern of progression. There's few or inconsistent results or they do folow a pattern such as being shown under one or two judges their whole life when you check them out.
Let's take a look at Larus' show record. Here it is. You can almost ignore the V1 placings between the VA ratings, VA dogs will just about V1 automatically between sieger shows. Look at his record prior to being VA9 in '02. Six judges placed him high. There's some consistency there. If it was one or two judges, be suspect.
In '04 you may remember Hill was called out in first, Larus was second. Hill would not go forward, he would take 20 steps, stop and look around, spin in a circle, and go repeat that process. About 1/3 of the way through the gaiting Mr Orschler stopped the class and approached Hill's handler and spoke to him. I imagine the words spoken were something to the effect; sir your dog is the current world champion, congratulations, he will not remain in that position much longer unless you can talk to him and convince him to move in the ring as a sieger should. After the conversation Hill's handler frantically looked around for some double handling assistance and made some gestures that looked as if he was saying; Where's my double handler? Where are you? Ah, there you are in the yellow shirt about 1/4 mile away. You must now run through the stadium, jump the fences and go through the crowd on the outside as fast as I go on the inside. Be off quickly now.
It didn't work as a few laps later Larus went out front. Larus was unbeatable in front he never missed a beat. He was a machine.
There was some opposition against him going into the show. The deck was somewhat stacked against him. He overcame or he took the hit ofr being sieger without enough top placing progeny. That's another story.
His show record continued and the following year he placed VA1 again under a different judge. Here's a video of some of Larus' progeny which included the VA1 female.
