Does anyone know the genetics of this?  Which parent passes it on or both?  Can half siblings pass it on (same sire different dam)?  Any answers on this is helpful.  I have read many different sites about it but they all say don't breed parents again or siblings of the affected pup, but nothing about breeding parents to differnt dogs or half siblings.  The dam will not be bred again and I do not own the sire, but I have a half sibling that I was considering breeding later on.  Any info at all will help.  I have emailed Dr. Clark to find out more just waiting on a reply.  Thank you.

It is suspected that only one parent needs to carry a copy of the genetic marker for mega esophagus to have affected pups. Dr. Clarks study is moving toward identifying that marker (I, too, am involved in that study and have sent in swabs for 3 of my dogs). If you can identify the carrier, that dog should NOT be bred and until there is a test to identify carrier pups, any puppies produced by the carrier should not be bred.
Dr. Clark is very good about answering email, though sometimes it takes a while.

I personally feel it is the dam in this case that is the carrier, the stud dog has produced 4 other litters all clear of this and I have owned and bred the dam's sire and never once has this showed up.  She is already scheduled to be spayed this month due to internal reproduction problems, nothing genetic though.  Thank you, I am definately awaiting Dr. Clark's email.  I am very interested in this and very willing to help at as much as I can.

I had a mega-e dog. When researching the pedigree, her granddam was said to produce it.
