I'm not a professional, just someone who is trying to do the best I can for my dog. I enjoy reading posts on here, it's sometimes shows other views on a subject.
Now, I was lucky enough to find THE dog I'd been looking for. The previous owner was feeding him Purina Extra and feeding it to him dry. She gave me a 40# bag almost full. Of course I immediately wanted to put him on a grain free dry and also continue on some raw. He decided upon coming to my house that he was no longer going to eat the Purina, whether it was dry or mixed with a canned food. I know I was wrong with adding canned food because then he didn't want dry. I can't blame him, I wouldn't want dry either, lol. He will not eat raw chicked. I am going to try him on ground beef today but I can not afford to feed him all raw as much as I wish I could. I'd like to give him for example a pound of ground beef ( or something other ) and then leave the dry out for him to eat between meals. I got him Diamond lamb and rice dry yesterday. He acts like he likes it a little but he never goes and eats it. I fed him some out of my hand to let him see what it tasted like. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong. I am going to feed him an egg 3-4 times a week and also raw beef bones on occasion. I carried him to my vet and got checked for heartworms. He was neg. and then put him on heart preventitive. He was given the 7-1, wormed and vaccinated for rabies. Not all at once now. He is 14 months old and he looks a little thin. You can't feel his ribs or backbone but he looks so long and he looks thin. My vet says it's because he's so young and growing so fast. I got some smart if not rude remarks about another post, if you don't want to take time to help me, just run along. Like I said I'm not a breeder or a professional, just someone who loves her dog and want to be worth of him. Thanks, Peggy

Hi Peggy, Get that GSD on a raw prey diet. I think we talked about this before. How long have you had him?  There will be some adjustment time before he gets a normal appetite. From your describtion, he doesn't sound under weight, and better a bit under than over. The slower the growth the better. He will eat when he wants. He won't starve! You should be able to feel his last 2 ribs or so. Over weight does nothing good for him. If you need the links I sent you before on raw prey diet, let me know. If you can't feed raw, Nature's Domain is an inexpensive no grain kibble. Only available at Cosco's. Don't know if you have those stores down there. Good luck and keep us up to date. Pete

Hey Pete and Mr. Wimmer,     You both have helped with your posts. I've had my baby "Shush" about a week and he is beautiful. His coat is soft and shiney and he is sturdy. Has strong energy, loves to pull on his rope toy. You cannot pull anything away from him. He's a beautiful blk/tn but mostly back. I want to get a pic to put on here but I don't know how to put it in. He's quite handsome. Has wonderful temprament. He hasn't acted aggressive in the least toward my cat but my cat is so afraid of him. I'm trying to get them to just agree to live together and nothing else. I got this dog because of my neighborhood getting a little worse the last few years. He's showing a little protective qualities no longer than I've had him. I got him from his previous owner who had to find him a new home for personal reasons. He was her baby. She has a baby girl 2 1/2 yrs old and her husband is in Iraq. So he's special. Thanks to you for your help. Peggy

Im sorry but a dog should be eating was he is giving if they will not eat in 10 minutes take the food and serve it the next day and continue with this undtil they learn that food should be eaten when served not when the dogs is hungry

most dogs will learn it this way because the lack the naturel instinct to feed when its possible

If this dog was doing well and liked it why change him?
I'd add some suppliments and let him be happy with his food.

Did you worm for tapeworms too?

I know my vet wormed him, I didn't ask for what.  He did say that the heartworm preventative will kill all but the tapeworm. For that I have to ck ever so often.

The reason for change is all ya'll on this forum say to give them food as grain free as I can.  He stinks and I've been told many times if I feed raw and the grain free dry then he will not stink as a rule.  Am I getting this right?  I want this baby to live with me and my husband the rest of our lives so I want to do the right things, LOL.  Thanks for all your help. I have a few pics but I cannot get them on here so maybe it won't be long.  Peggy

What on earth are you doing getting another German Shepherd dog, you could not handle or get on with the one you had before. Now all of a sudden you have another one and this one is not eating, and what the hell are you carrying it to the vets for the dog has four legs to be able to walk to the vets on its own with you on the end of the leash to take it there,
Any dog as i said before that does NOT eat what you put in front of it providing it is sound food , if it will not eat it then it is not hungry and is being over fed. If ot does not then it is unwell or over fed other than that there is no reason at all for it not to eat, and a German shepherd dog like all dogs should be lean and muscled up, and every dog should eat more if given it that is the correct way to keep a dog.
To many Dog people feed there dogs to look like themselves Thats a fact, i.e if a person is big then they think there dog should be big etc may i ask you if you are a large lady or a small lady and i do not mean to be funny in asking you. MY bet is that you are a large built person
The first Shepherd you had problems with now this second dog, Would you not think a smaller type dog would suit you better, if you think for one moment that because it is a German Shepherd it will protect you you are in for a rude awakening, No it will not no more so than a small dog will unless it has been trained to do so with you in mind
You do yourself no favours or the dog by asking basic questions certainly after the last time.
